Carbonex 20 Tour: the 20 Power’s twin in Yonex’s 1996 Asian catalog
Two 20s, one rating line
Yonex’s 1996 Asian catalog ends its first Carbonex Series spread with two racquets rated alike: the Carbonex 20 Power, flagged NEW, and the Carbonex 20 Tour, with no flag. Both are Professional-level hard hitters rated 5 for flex, power and control, and they are the only models on the series’ two High Performance spreads rated 5 for power. In the catalog they differ in name and finish; the Tour has a black shaft and a black cover crossed by a large blue X. That catalog is the only Yonex document known to name the 20 Tour.
What Yonex printed, and what Tour means elsewhere
Yonex gives the 20 Tour the Built-In T-Joint and a high-modulus graphite frame and shaft, the build it prints for the Carbonex 880, 25 and 21 on the same page. With no NEW or LATEST flag, the 20 Tour was probably on sale before the catalog, but no earlier Yonex document is known, so 1996 is its first documented year. The catalog prints no weight, balance, flex word or country of manufacture, and does not say which end of its flex scale is stiff. On the next spread the Tour suffix marks the Carbonex 9 Tour and 8 Tour, graphite-framed versions of the aluminum-framed Carbonex 9 and 8. Yonex’s history display already describes the Carbonex 20 of 1984 as all carbon, and no Yonex source says what Tour means on a 20.
Taufik Hidayat, by forum account
No Yonex source names a player with the Carbonex 20 Tour. Collector-forum posts credit it to Indonesian players of the late 1990s and 2000s, Taufik Hidayat among them, and a 2013 forum thread places a 20 Tour after his Carbonex 20. Yonex’s Legendary Players page of 2013 quotes Taufik saying only that as a national junior he “used the Carbonex 20,” after the Carbonex 9 his father gave him in 1993. It names no Tour, and the five favorite racquets of his that it shows go back only to the Armortec 700 of 2003.
Blue X, black shaft, and the “Specials”
Yonex documents no colorways or editions. The catalog photo shows a dark frame with a thin gold line around the hoop, a black shaft and a black grip, with a black full cover crossed by a large blue X and lettered Carbonex 20 Tour in gold. The Carbonex 20 Power has the same printed build and ratings but a blue-purple shaft and a plain black cover with a gold YONEX logo, and the Carbonex 20L, flagged LATEST, is the page’s third numbered 20. Forum and resale listings add a “Carbonex 20 Tour Special” and an “SP code” 20 Tour; no Yonex source uses either name.
Off Yonex’s lists by 1999
No later Yonex list known includes the 20 Tour. The 1999 Asian catalog’s spec chart runs its Carbonex Series from the 20 Long and 22 to the 8000, and the 2000 catalog’s from the 23 and 21 to the 8000, both without it. No Yonex list from 1997 or 1998 is documented, so 1996 is both its first and its last documented year, and its production end is unknown. No Yonex Japan page for the model is known. The 1996 date itself is the attribution of the collector who published the catalog scans; the pages carry no printed year. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Reading the name
No counterfeit of the Carbonex 20 Tour is documented. The risk is mistaken identity: the 20 Power is rated identically in Yonex’s catalog, and the plain Carbonex 20, the 20L and the Carbonex 20 Muscle share the number, so the printed model name is the main evidence. Seller descriptions of a 2U frame made in Japan describe individual frames, not a Yonex specification.
More story than record
The Carbonex 20 Tour’s standing among collectors rests largely on forum memories of Indonesian players; Yonex’s own record is one catalog entry. Its documented namesakes carried the number on: the Carbonex 20 Long in Yonex’s 1999 and 2000 Asian catalogs, the Carbonex 20 Muscle of 2002–05 and the plain Carbonex 20 into 2024.
Yonex’s 1996 Asian catalog is the only Yonex specification for the Carbonex 20 Tour: Built-In T-Joint, high-modulus graphite frame and shaft, Professional level, and Flex 5, Power 5, Control 5 on the catalog’s own scale. It gives no weight, balance, flex word or country of manufacture. Check that the frame or cover reads Carbonex 20 Tour; in the catalog photo the shaft is black and the black cover is crossed by a large blue X with gold lettering. A blue-purple shaft and a plain black cover with a gold logo point to the 20 Power. Treat “Special” and “SP code” as seller terms. On a frame about 30 years old, inspect the joint, the grommet holes and the hoop for cracks.
Listings and forum posts tie the 20 Tour to Taufik Hidayat, but Yonex documents only “the Carbonex 20” in his junior years, so a racquet sold as “Taufik’s 20 Tour” is repeating collector lore. Look for the printed Tour name, ideally with the blue-X cover, and treat weight, balance and origin claims as the seller’s, not Yonex’s.
