Before carbon was common: Carbonex 21 Special
The apex of pre-nano construction
By 1998, high-modulus graphite construction was becoming standard in elite badminton racquets. The Carbonex 21 Special represented the apex of that pre-NANOMETRIC era — Yonex's highest-grade carbon offering before the company began introducing nano-scale materials into frame construction in the mid-2000s. The 'Special' designation distinguished it from the standard CAB-21 through reinforced box frame geometry and premium-grade HM Graphite in both frame and shaft.
What it was built for
Contemporary reviews praised the Carbonex 21 series for exceptional raw power and solid feel — a racquet built for singles players who could generate their own head speed and wanted the frame to amplify it without interference. The CAB-21SP's even balance profile made it more versatile than the extreme head-heavy designs of later generations, rewarding players who combined controlled aggression with quick hands at the net. Rated 9/10 for power by period reviewers.
Historical undervaluation
At $200, the CAB-21SP is perhaps the most historically undervalued piece in the database. It represents the final evolution of an entire generation of racquet design — Made in Japan, all-graphite, built before digital documentation, before nano-materials, before the era of player signatures. Finding examples with original grips and minimal frame wear is the challenge — and increasingly, the reward.
'Special' designation on shaft or frame — distinct from the standard CAB-21. Box frame construction visible on shaft cross-section. HM Graphite only — no NANOMETRIC designation (pre-2005 production). 2U weight class (very heavy by modern standards). Made in Japan stamp. No Yonex hologram — pre-dates the hologram program.
Chronically undervalued for its historical significance as the final pre-nano Yonex flagship. Buy any mint example at current prices.
