Nanospeed 800: the stiff, Taiwan-made Nanospeed with a carbon-nanotube shaft

A nanotube Nanospeed from Taiwan

The Nanospeed 800 was a stiff, 3U Nanospeed that Yonex listed on its international (export) site from February 2008 to March 2010. In 2008 it and the Nanospeed 500 were the only Taiwan-made models on that Nanospeed list, and the only ones whose shafts Yonex described as carbon nanotube; the Japan-made 4500, 6000, 7000, 8000 and 9000 listed fullerene instead. Yonex named no player for it and printed no price, and no Yonex Japan listing of it is known.

Two specifications under one name

Yonex gives no launch date. The 800 first appears on its export Nanospeed list in late February 2008, together with the 500 and the Japan-made 4500, in the same update that dropped the 5000 and 7700. That listing gave a stiff flex, a high-modulus graphite frame, a carbon-nanotube shaft and one weight class, 3U (85.0–89.9 g), with grips G3–G5, and named Nanoscience, Isometric, the built-in T-joint and the Delta Power Frame. In March 2009 the entry became “NANOSPEED 800 (NEW DESIGN)”: frame and shaft were now both “H.M. Graphite, Carbon Nanotube”, and Cup Stack Carbon Nanotube joined the technology list. The flex, the weight class and the Taiwan origin stayed the same. Yonex China’s site also listed the 800 by August 2008; its page of January 2009 gave a high-modulus graphite frame, a carbon-nanotube shaft and 3U.

No player on record

Yonex’s list pages and Yonex China’s page name no player for the Nanospeed 800, and no Yonex tournament report or staff page connecting a player to it is known. On the export list it sat below the Japan-made Nanospeeds as the stiffer of the two Taiwan-made models.

The 2009 redesign, and the 850

Yonex printed no color for either 800 design; its list added color lines only in April 2010, after the 800 had gone. The two designs are told apart on the list by their materials: the 2008 listing put carbon nanotube in the shaft only, the 2009 one in frame and shaft, with Cup Stack Carbon Nanotube. By April 2010 the list showed a new stiff, Taiwan-made Nanospeed 850 in Black/Gold, with Super HMG added to its frame, and no 800; Yonex does not say the 850 is the 800 renamed, and the 850 has its own page. The Nanospeed 8000 is a different, Japan-made, extra-stiff frame, and the Nanoray 800 and Nanoflare 800 belong to later series; each has its own page.

Two years on the export list

The 800 was an export model: Yonex’s international site and Yonex China’s site listed it. It was last on the export list in March 2010, and by April the 850 had taken its place. With no production end stated, 2010 is the last year it is documented on sale new. Shops outside Japan sold the two designs under season labels such as “2009”, which are not Yonex launch years. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Mostly a question of identity

No counterfeit of the Nanospeed 800 is documented. The practical risk is a mix-up with numbers that look alike: the Japan-made Nanospeed 8000, the 850 that followed it, and the Nanoray 800 and Nanoflare 800 of later series. Shop descriptions call the 800 head-light, but Yonex gave no balance for it, so that word is retail copy rather than a Yonex specification.

The stiff end of the Taiwan Nanospeeds

The 800 was the stiff end of the Taiwan-made Nanospeeds on Yonex’s export list. From March 2009 the 300, 200 and 100 joined it and the 500, all Taiwan-made with carbon nanotube in the shaft and Cup Stack Carbon Nanotube listed, while the Japan-made models, the new 9900 included, kept fullerene; each of the three has its own page. The 850 replaced it in 2010. For a collector it is a footnote to the fullerene Nanospeeds: a documented export model with two listed specifications and no player connection.

Authentication

Yonex listed the Nanospeed 800 as Stiff, 3U (85.0–89.9 g) with grips G3, G4 or G5, made in Taiwan. The 2008 listing gives a high-modulus graphite frame and a carbon-nanotube shaft; the 2009 “New Design” gives high-modulus graphite and carbon nanotube in both, with Cup Stack Carbon Nanotube. Yonex printed no color, balance or string-tension range for it. A Japan-made, extra-stiff frame numbered 8000 is the Nanospeed 8000; a Black/Gold 850 is its 2010 successor on the list; Nanoray 800 and Nanoflare 800 markings belong to later series. A frame marked with another weight class or another country does not match Yonex’s listing.

Outlook

Read the number twice: 800, 8000 and 850 are three different Nanospeeds, and the 800 name returned on a Nanoray and a Nanoflare. Check the head, the T-joint and the grommets for cracks and wear, as with any frame of this age. Yonex documents no player or edition of the 800 and names no color, so treat any tour connection or rare-color claim in a listing as unproven.
