ArcSaber 9: the women-only ArcSaber Yonex Japan launched in 2008

An ArcSaber made for women

Yonex Japan announced the ArcSaber 9 in August 2008 as a “women-only badminton racquet” (女性専用), on sale from 13 September 2008, and called it a model built for the performance advanced women players want. Its product page described it as giving intermediate-to-advanced women a light, supple flight, and its suitability chart left the men’s row blank. Yonex’s international (export) list sold the same Ruby frame with no women’s wording at all, as a Medium-flex ArcSaber made in Japan.

Light Feel Carbon in a control frame

The 9 arrived as the third ArcSaber, after the 7 of 2007 and the stiffer 10 of 2008, and joined them on Yonex’s export list by September 2008. Yonex Japan listed a high-modulus carbon frame with cup-stacked carbon nanotubes and Light Feel Carbon, a high-modulus carbon shaft and a new built-in T-joint, plus the 10 mm longer frame, Ultra PE fiber, the C.S.CAP, a new grommet pattern, Isometric head shape, Solid Feel Core and Aero-Box frame. Yonex recommends 19–24 lb for the 3U and 20–25 lb for the 2U. Yonex Japan’s 2009 and 2010 spec charts put its balance on the even mark. For the launch Yonex Japan lent trial-racquet sets that included the 9 and ran a draw in which Yonex staff visited nine clubs for a special clinic.

No documented player

No Yonex advisory-staff page, tournament report or release names a player on the ArcSaber 9. Its women-only launch in Japan was aimed at club and advanced amateur players rather than tied to a professional. The ArcSaber players of the period are documented on the ArcSaber 7 and 10.

One color, then the 9 FL

Yonex documented one design, Ruby (color code 673 in Japan), in 3U (grips G5 and G6) and 2U (G5) in Japan, and 3U and 2U in G4 and G5 for export. Between Yonex Japan’s lists of 21 September and 5 October 2010 its slot passed to the ArcSaber 9 FL, a different model under its own item code (ARC9FL) with Toughlex in place of Light Feel Carbon, a Crystal Pink finish and lighter 4U and 3U sizes; Yonex Japan’s pages give both the same dedicated grommet set, AC416ACA. The Duora 9 and Voltric 9 are unrelated frames.

Two years in Japan, longer abroad

Yonex Japan’s 2010 product page priced the 9 at ¥23,000 before tax (¥24,150 with tax); no Yonex price from its 2008 launch has been found. It was on Yonex Japan’s racquet list until September 2010. Yonex’s international (export) list kept showing it until June 2011 (last listed on 13 June 2011), although Yonex’s 2011 export web catalog already showed the 9 FL instead. It does not appear among Yonex Japan’s old-model production-end groups, so no production-end year is documented. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Fakes and mix-ups

No counterfeit of this model is documented. The likelier mistake is identity: listings sometimes treat the ArcSaber 9 and 9 FL as one racquet. The Ruby finish, the 3U or 2U size and an ARC9 code point to the 9; a pink frame in 4U points to the 9 FL.

A short branch of the early ArcSaber line

The ArcSaber 9 was the first ArcSaber Yonex aimed at women, launched a year after the 7 opened the series and months after the 10. In 2010 its slot passed to the lighter 9 FL, which Yonex Japan’s chart again rated for women and which stayed on sale into 2016. The 9 itself left one design, no documented player and about two years on Yonex Japan’s list.

Authentication

Check for the details Yonex documented: Made in Japan, a Ruby finish, the item code ARC9, and a 3U or 2U weight class (Japan: 3U in G5 or G6, 2U in G5; export: G4 or G5). Yonex’s export list rates the shaft Medium flex, and Yonex recommends 19–24 lb in 3U and 20–25 lb in 2U, so a frame strung far above that may have been stressed. Yonex published no description of the frame prints, so compare a candidate against photographs of a known original rather than against a printed spec. A pink frame or a 4U label is the ArcSaber 9 FL, not the 9.

Outlook

A two-year Japanese model with a single Ruby design and a women-only launch, the ArcSaber 9 is a footnote in the early ArcSaber line between the 7 and the 10. Buyers should confirm Ruby, ARC9 and the 3U/2U size before treating a listing as the 9 rather than its pink successor, and should check the joint and frame for the usual wear of a racquet from 2008–2011.
