The power awakening: Lee Chong Wei's Armortec 900 Power
The racquet that made LCW World #1
Lee Chong Wei first reached World #1 in 2008. His weapon was the Armortec 900 Power — the most aggressively head-heavy racquet Yonex had ever produced at the time. For a player who had been labeled a defensive specialist in his early career, choosing the 900P was a declaration: LCW would win by attacking.
Power vs. Technique: the 900 split
Yonex released the AT-900 in two simultaneous variants. The 900P was designated for Lee Chong Wei — extra stiff, head-heavy, built for maximum smash output. The 900T went to Taufik Hidayat — stiff, even balance, optimized for placement and control. The two racquets are a perfect technical expression of the two players' philosophies. The Power variant commands a slight premium today.
The first great rivalry weapons
The AT-900P era coincides with the first full chapter of the LCW vs. Lin Dan rivalry. Lin Dan was playing the AT-700. Both racquets were built for power but with different balance philosophy — Lin Dan favored head-heavy with extra stiff, LCW's 900P was similarly aggressive but with a different shaft response. That specific matchup, with those specific racquets, produced some of the most aesthetically satisfying men's singles badminton ever played.
'Power' variant label clearly printed on shaft. Head-heavy balance — tips forward in hang test. Extra Stiff shaft designation. Made in Japan. Standard Yonex hologram. LCW association is informal on this model; no signature printing.
Modest appreciation. Value is tied to LCW's legacy and the AT-900P's role as his earliest flagship weapon. Most interesting as the starting chapter in a complete Lee Chong Wei collection timeline.
