Marcus Gideon's hammer: Astrox 88D Ruby Red

Gideon's weapon

The Astrox 88D in its original Ruby Red colorway is the racquet Marcus Gideon used during the height of his Men's Doubles dominance alongside Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo. Released in 2018, the 88D was engineered as the 'Dominant' half of the pair — heavier balance, more power, designed for the player taking the lead smashes from the back court.

The Dominant design

The 88D platform introduced Yonex's ROTATIONAL GENERATOR SYSTEM, which optimised the balance point to maximise rotational force at impact while the NAMD shaft material (Nano Material + carbon fibre) enabled explosive flex-return during the swing. The Ruby Red colorway was produced exclusively in Japan and has never been re-released — subsequent 88D generations moved to entirely different colorways, making the original 1st Gen Ruby Red a true end-of-run collectible.

Undervalued for what it represents

At $448 with no YoY movement, the AX-88D is arguably undervalued. Gideon and Sukamuljo's 2017–2018 era represents one of the most celebrated periods in Men's Doubles history — a partnership that redefined attacking doubles play globally. As that legacy solidifies, collector interest in era-specific equipment tends to follow.

Authentication

Deep ruby red finish — distinct from the 2nd Gen 88D colorways. 'ROTATIONAL GENERATOR SYSTEM' text on frame. NAMD shaft designation. Made in Japan. Head-heavy balance. Stiff flex. Standard Yonex hologram.

Outlook

Patient buy. Doubles-era collectibles tend to lag behind singles racquets in collector attention, then catch up. The 2017-18 Gideon/Sukamuljo period will be studied — this is the equipment from that era.
