Kevin's frontcourt weapon: Astrox 88 S Off White/Red
Two roles, two racquets
The Astrox 88 S launched simultaneously with the 88 D in 2018 as Yonex's definitive statement on Men's Doubles: two racquets built for two roles. Where the 88 D in Ruby Red was Marcus Gideon's back-court hammer, the 88 S in Off White/Red was Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo's instrument — designed for the frontcourt specialist who needed explosive net reflexes, punishing flat drives, and the ability to redirect power from any position at close range. The 'S' for Skill stood in deliberate contrast to the 'D' for Dominant.
Built for Kevin's hand speed
The Off White/Red 1st Gen used NAMD shaft technology in the Rotational Generator System frame for rapid flex-and-snapback response — giving Kevin the quick-release feel that his freakishly fast hand speed demanded. At 3U Made in Japan, it was the same tier as the 88 D, but with a slightly less extreme balance point calibrated for the shorter, sharper swing cycles of frontcourt play. No other production racquet before it was engineered this explicitly around a specific player's frontcourt role.
Underpriced for what it represents
At $328, the Off White/Red 1st Gen is priced below the 88 D's $448, which understates its historical significance. Kevin Sanjaya's era-defining frontcourt dominance — arguably the most spectacular doubles play of the 2010s — was built with this frame in hand. The partnership with Gideon produced the most celebrated Men's Doubles run of their era. That story is worth more than the current market reflects.
Off White/Red colorway — not the 2nd or 3rd Gen colors. NAMD shaft designation on frame. ROTATIONAL GENERATOR SYSTEM text present. Made in Japan. Slightly less extreme balance than the 88 D — verify with hang test. Stiff flex. Standard Yonex hologram.
Patient buy. Doubles-era collectibles lag behind singles in collector attention, then catch up. Kevin Sanjaya's 2018–2020 frontcourt dominance will be studied; this is the racquet from that era at a singles-racquet discount.
