Carbonex 8300: the stiffest-rated of Yonex’s three 1996 graphite beginner racquets

Top of the beginner trio

Yonex’s 1996 Asian catalog marked three graphite-framed beginner Carbonex as “New,” and the 8300 heads the spread. It is the trio’s stiffest and most controlled on paper: rated 3 for flex and 3 for control, against 2 for flex on both the 8200 and the 8000. A Yonex spec chart that the collector dates to 1999 keeps that order, with the 8300’s flex dot mid-scale and those of the 8200 and 8000 at the Flexible end.

Graphite frame, built-in joint

The catalog block reads Built-In T-Joint, Player: Beginner, Frame: Graphite, Shaft: Graphite, and ratings of 3 for flex, 2 for power and 3 for control on the catalog’s own scale. The spread is headed “Carbonex Series High Performance,” with a “Hard Hitter” label beside each frame. On the 1999 chart its dots sit mid-scale for flex and control and one step above the bottom for power. No year is printed on the 1996 pages, so 1996 is its first documented year rather than a launch date. Yonex documents no weight, balance, flex word, item code or country of manufacture.

No player on record

No player is documented using the Carbonex 8300. The spread’s photograph shows Mia Audina, but the page does not name the racquet in her hand, and no Yonex source ties her to any of its beginner models.

One photograph, three neighbors

Yonex documents no editions or named colorways. The catalog photograph shows a dark frame with blue trim and a dark full-length cover. Its spread-mates are the Carbonex 8200, also with a built-in T-joint, the jointless Carbonex 8000 (both have their own pages), and the aluminum-framed Carbonex B2000 and B1000. The intermediate Carbonex 8 Tour of the same catalog is also graphite with a built-in joint, but is an Intermediate model rated a step higher for control; it has its own page.

Two documents, 1996 and 1999

Yonex’s 1996 spreads print no prices, so no Yonex list price for the 8300 is known. Its only other Yonex record is the 1999 spec chart; the chart in the 2000 Asian catalog no longer has an 8300 column, and the Yonex USA Carbonex pages documented from 1999 to 2004 do not list it. No Yonex Japan listing is documented, and 1999 is its last documented year. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Reading the name

No counterfeit of the Carbonex 8300 is documented. With no item code or specification beyond the catalog block, the model name printed on the frame is the only documented identifier; the 8200 shares its construction on paper, and a jointless throat is the 8000.

A short-lived beginner model

The 8300 is the least documented of the three 1990s beginner Carbonex: two Yonex documents and no listing outside Asia. Its launch date, price, weights and country of manufacture are undocumented.

Authentication

Yonex’s only specification for the Carbonex 8300 is its 1996 Asian catalog block: Built-In T-Joint, Beginner, a graphite frame and a graphite shaft, photographed with a dark frame with blue trim. No weight, balance, flex word, item code or country of manufacture is documented, so a seller’s claim about any of them is not Yonex’s. Read the printed name: the Carbonex 8200 has the same construction on paper, and a jointless throat points to the Carbonex 8000. On a frame about 30 years old, inspect the throat, the hoop and the grommets for cracks.

Outlook

The 8300 is a footnote for collectors assembling Yonex’s mid-1990s beginner range; it has the thinnest Yonex record of the three. The printed name is what separates it from the 8200 and 8000. Claims about its year, weight or country of manufacture need evidence beyond the listing.
