Carbonex 8 Tour: a graphite-framed Carbonex 8, listed beside the aluminum one in 1996

Two Carbonex 8s on one page

Yonex’s 1996 Asian catalog, dated by the collector who scanned it, prints two Carbonex 8s side by side. The plain Carbonex 8 keeps the formula of 1978: an aluminum frame on a graphite shaft, joined by a conventional T-joint. The Carbonex 8 Tour beside it is a different racquet, with a graphite frame, a graphite shaft and a built-in T-joint, rated for intermediate players. That catalog is the only Yonex document that names the 8 Tour, and Yonex’s spec chart dated to 1999 no longer lists it.

Graphite frame, built-in joint

The 8 Tour sits on the catalog’s second High Performance spread, with the Carbonex 15, 10 and 9 Tour for advanced players and the 9 and 8 for intermediates; every model there carries the Hard Hitter label. Yonex lists a Built-In T-Joint, a graphite frame, a graphite shaft and the Intermediate player level, with ratings of 3 for flex, 2 for power and 4 for control on the catalog’s own scale; the plain Carbonex 8 is rated 5, 3 and 4. The 8 Tour’s power rating is the lowest on its spread. The catalog prints no weight, balance, flex word, price or country of manufacture, and no launch date: the 8 Tour carries no New or Latest flag, so it may be older than 1996.

No player on record

No player is documented using the Carbonex 8 Tour. The catalog spread that lists it names no player for any of its six models, and “Intermediate” there is a player level, not a named user.

The Tour pattern

Yonex documents no colorways of the Carbonex 8 Tour. The catalog photo shows a dark frame and shaft with the name printed along the shaft, a gold-colored throat piece and a black cover lettered “Carbonex 8 Tour.” The same catalog uses the Tour name twice more: the Carbonex 9 Tour is the graphite-framed, built-in-joint partner of the aluminum-framed Carbonex 9, as the 8 Tour is of the 8, while the Professional-level 20 Tour sits beside the 20 Power. An owner’s account describes a frame marked “Carbonex 8 Tour SP” as one-piece carbon with no assembled T-joint, which matches the catalog; no Yonex source explains the “SP.”

One catalog, no price

No Yonex price for the Carbonex 8 Tour is documented. Its documented life is a single catalog: Yonex’s spec chart dated to 1999 lists the Carbonex 9 Tour and 8 but no 8 Tour, the 2000 Asian catalog shows a new box-section Carbonex-8 and no Tour version, and Yonex Japan’s racquet list of April 2001 has neither. A listing titled only “Carbonex 8” can be either racquet, and the frame material tells them apart. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Telling the two Carbonex 8s apart

No counterfeit of the Carbonex 8 Tour is documented. The practical question is which Carbonex 8 a frame is. The 8 Tour’s head is graphite, joined to the shaft by a built-in T-joint; the Carbonex 8 of the same catalog has a copper-colored aluminum head with a separate blue T-joint in the photo. The Carbonex 8000, 8200 and 8300 of the same catalog are beginner models with their own names and pages, and the later Carbonex-8600 (it has its own page) and the aluminum-framed 8 DX (see CAB-8) are different racquets again.

A footnote to the 8

The Carbonex 8 Tour is a footnote to one of Yonex’s best-known names: a graphite-framed take on the Carbonex 8, documented in one catalog. The Tour name continued in the series with the Carbonex-10 Tour, which Yonex’s 2000 catalog marks New, with a graphite frame on a high-modulus shaft and the Muscle Power Frame; Yonex never links the two. The Carbonex 8 itself stayed on Yonex’s export list into 2010 (see CAB-8).

Authentication

Yonex’s 1996 Asian catalog is the only specification for the Carbonex 8 Tour: a graphite frame and graphite shaft with a built-in T-joint, for intermediate players, rated 3 for flex, 2 for power and 4 for control on the catalog’s own scale. It gives no weight, balance, flex word or country of manufacture. Among frames printed Carbonex 8, a graphite head with no separate joint at the throat points to the 8 Tour; an aluminum head with a separate T-joint is a Carbonex 8. Read the shaft print for “Tour”; letters such as SP after the name have no Yonex explanation. On a frame this old, check the throat and hoop for cracks and the grommets for wear.

Outlook

The Carbonex 8 Tour is a find for collectors assembling the 1990s Carbonex line rather than a racquet with a player’s story. Yonex documents it in one catalog, with no launch or end date, so any year a seller gives is a guess unless the frame or its paperwork shows it. Confirm “Tour” in the print and the graphite head before treating a frame as this model.
