Isometric Power 600: the “high speed power player” frame of Yonex’s 1996 catalog

The “Power” in Slim, Tour, Power, Long

Yonex’s 1996 Asian catalog prints its Isometric Series under four words, Slim, Tour, Power and Long, and the Isometric Power 600 is the racquet under “Power.” It is one of three Professional-level frames on the spread, tagged “High speed power player,” with a high-modulus graphite frame and shaft and the catalog’s top rating of 5 for flex, power and control. That catalog is the only Yonex document of it. It carries no New tag, which suggests it was already on sale by then, and no later Yonex list names it.

What the catalog prints

The catalog gives the Power 600 a built-in T-joint, the Professional player level and high-modulus graphite for frame and shaft: the same lines and ratings it prints for the Isometric Tour 800 beside it. On the page the two differ in name, finish and tag line, power player against touch player. The ratings are on the catalog’s own scale of 1 to 5, not a flex word. Yonex printed no weight, balance, flex word, item code or country of manufacture for the Power 600, and no Yonex price for it is documented.

No player on record

No player is documented using the Isometric Power 600. The Isometric spread carries no player photographs, and its “Professional” label is a player level shared with the Slim 10 and Tour 800, not a named user.

Two Powers and a Tour

The spread’s other “Power” is the Isometric Power 200, an advanced-level racquet with a graphite frame on a high-modulus graphite shaft, rated 3 for flex and 4 for power and control; it has its own page. The Tour 800 is the Power 600’s closest relative on the page; it has its own page. The green-and-yellow Slim 10, tagged New and also labeled for power players, may be the export name of the Super Isometric 10 that Yonex Japan launched in early 1996, but Yonex never equates the two. In the catalog photo the Power 600 has a dark frame with violet and red on the hoop and white near the throat, a dark upper shaft lettered in gold, a red lower shaft and a black full cover lettered in gold. Yonex names no color, and no other colorway or edition is documented.

One catalog, then gone

The Power 600’s documented life is short. A US club’s price list for 1997 still offered it, but by 1999 Yonex no longer listed it: Yonex USA’s Isometric page of that year shows the Tour-800, Tour-300, 250 Long and 90 Light, a Yonex spec chart dated to 1999 has no Power 600 column, and the 2000 Asian catalog omits it too. No Yonex catalog or lineup from 1997 or 1998 is documented, so 1996 is its last documented year rather than a known production end. None of Yonex Japan’s archived product and old-model pages, which begin in 2000, names it. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Checking the print

No counterfeit of the Isometric Power 600 is documented. Because the catalog gives it the Tour 800’s materials and ratings, and the Power 200 shares its name, the printed model name decides. On a frame about 30 years old, the throat, the hoop and the grommets deserve a close look.

Between the landmarks

The Power 600 belongs to the years between two of Yonex’s isometric landmarks: the 1992 Isometric 500, which brought the square head and does not appear on the 1996 spread, and the 1998 Isometric Swing Power 900, which sold one racquet in four tuned types. Each has its own page. Of the three Professional-level Isometrics of 1996, only the Tour 800 appears on Yonex’s later lists.

Authentication

Read the shaft: in the 1996 catalog photo ISOMETRIC POWER 600 is lettered in gold on a dark upper shaft above a red lower shaft, and the hoop shows violet, red and white on a dark frame; the head should have the squared isometric shape. The catalog is Yonex’s only specification: a built-in T-joint and a high-modulus graphite frame and shaft. Yonex documented no weight class, balance, flex word or country of manufacture, so a seller’s figures for these are unverified. A frame printed TOUR 800 is a different racquet with the same catalog ratings, and a POWER 200 has a graphite frame. Check the throat, the hoop and the grommets on a frame this old.

Outlook

The Isometric Power 600 is a piece for completists of Yonex’s 1990s Isometrics, known from one Asian catalog page. With so little documented, buy on the printed name and the squared head, and treat any claim about its weight, a Japanese version or a player who used it as unproven until a Yonex source supports it.
