Nanoray 7 SE: the one 4U racquet among Hendra Setiawan’s three 2016 Cool White Nanorays

The 4U in Setiawan’s white

Yonex’s 2016 line put Hendra Setiawan’s Cool White on three Nanorays, and the Nanoray 7 SE, item NR7SE, is the one that breaks the pattern. The Japan-made 900 SE and the Nanoray 95DX SE are stiff 3U frames; Yonex USA lists the 7 SE as medium flex and 4U, with a plain graphite frame. Cool White was the color Yonex Japan picked to express Setiawan’s defensive play. Yonex lists it with the same specifications as Ahsan’s Deep Red 7 AH, and the two are the only medium-flex frames in the pair’s line.

A spec sheet and nothing more

Yonex’s global news of June 24, 2016 announced “a new limited edition line of NANORAY racquets designed in the image of” Setiawan and his partner Mohammad Ahsan, and Yonex USA’s line page listed the 7 SE by June 30. Its product page carries only a specification block: a graphite frame, a shaft of graphite with Nanomesh and Carbon Nanotube, medium flex, and 4U (average 83 g) in grips 4 and 5. Yonex recommends 19–24 lb. The page states no balance and no country of manufacture and names no further technology. Its figures were unchanged in August 2022.

Setiawan’s name, the 900 in his hands

Setiawan is the racquet’s namesake, not a documented user. Yonex Japan’s launch release, which called the pair the world’s No. 2 in men’s doubles, shows them at the June 2016 Indonesia Open with the 900 AH and 900 SE, and Yonex’s line text says they had played the Nanoray 900 since 2014. No Yonex report lists Setiawan or any other player with a 7 SE. His own edition is the 900 SE, which has its own page; the 7 SE puts his design on a 4U, medium-flex frame rather than the stiff 3U he played.

Cool White, three ways

The line held six racquets, three for each player: Setiawan’s 900 SE, 95DX SE and 7 SE, and Ahsan’s 900 AH, 70DX AH and 7 AH. Its twin on Ahsan’s side, the Deep Red 7 AH, has its own page. The 95DX SE shares its color and suffix but is a different class of racquet: stiff and 3U (average 88 g), with a frame of high-modulus graphite, Nanocell and Solid Titanium. Yonex listed the 7 SE in one color and one weight. No standard Nanoray 7 is documented on Yonex’s US, international or UK sites.

Limited, with no stated end

Yonex described the line as limited and gave no quantity or production end. Yonex USA’s 2016 pages show no prices, and Yonex Japan’s release left the 7 SE out, so it has no documented launch price and no documented Yonex sale in Japan. Yonex USA re-posted the page at a new address in October 2017 and kept it up until at least August 2022, as it kept the 900s’ and the 95DX SE’s pages for years, so the page’s survival says nothing about stock; 2016 is the only year the 7 SE is documented on sale new. Listings use “Nanoray 7 SE” or the code NR7SE. No verified sales are recorded yet.

The plain white Nanoray 7

No counterfeit of the 7 SE is documented. The likelier problem is a plain “Nanoray 7” in Cool White, which retailers in several countries sell under the code NR7 and which Yonex’s US, international and UK sites do not document. Retail descriptions give it figures Yonex never published for the SE, such as an 80 g weight and a high-modulus graphite frame; whether it is the same frame is not documented. A white racquet without the SE name or the code NR7SE should not be sold as this edition.

The light end of the white set

No reissue or later Setiawan design of the Nanoray 7 is documented. The 7 SE completes the white half of the 2016 set at its lightest and least stiff end. The frames Yonex tied to the players were the 900 SE and 900 AH, and the pair’s 2016 season is told on their pages.

Authentication

Yonex’s name for it is NANORAY 7SE, item code NR7SE. Yonex listed it in Cool White only, 4U (average 83 g), grip 4 or 5, medium flex, with a graphite frame and a graphite shaft with Nanomesh and Carbon Nanotube; Yonex recommends 19–24 lb. Every other Cool White racquet in the line is 3U and rated stiff: the 900 SE (Made in Japan) and the 95DX SE. A Deep Red racquet with the 7 SE’s specifications is the 7 AH. Yonex China’s page for the 7 SE gives its factory as China. Yonex’s general checks apply: a laser-engraved production code on the cap and a hologram sticker that resists peeling.

Outlook

Collect it as the white, 4U member of the Setiawan set, not as his match racquet. Ask for photographs that show the NR7SE name and the 4U label, and treat listings titled only “Nanoray 7 Cool White” as the plain retail model unless they show the SE. Be careful with copy that calls it the racquet Setiawan played or blurs it with the 95DX SE. Check the frame in daylight for cracks, repainting and a replaced grip.
