Nanoray 900 SE: the Cool White edition Yonex designed for Hendra Setiawan’s defense
Setiawan’s white
Yonex Japan gave Hendra Setiawan a Cool White Nanoray 900 in 2016, chosen, it said, to stand for his defensive play; his partner Mohammad Ahsan got a Deep Red twin, the Nanoray 900 AH. By then Setiawan was among the most decorated doubles players of his era. With Markis Kido he had won the 2007 world title and Olympic gold at Beijing in 2008, and with Ahsan he won the World Championships and the season-ending Superseries Finals in 2013 and again in 2015, the record Yonex cited for the edition. In the autumn of 2016 Yonex’s reports printed “NANORAY 900SE” beside his name, at first with Ahsan and then with a new partner, Rian Agung Saputro.
The standard frame in white
Yonex Japan announced the NANORAY 900SE and 900AH on June 23, 2016 as player-exclusive designs for the pair, then ranked second in the world, and released them in limited quantity in early July; Yonex USA presented them the next day as a limited line commemorating the pair. The SE is a Nanoray 900 under the paint, the racquet Yonex designed to send a sharply angled smash down in front of the opponent. Yonex lists the same materials as the standard frame: high-modulus and high-strength carbon with Nanometric and Super HMG in the frame, and high-modulus carbon with X-Fullerene and Ultra PE fiber in the shaft. It is rated stiff and made in Japan. Like the AH it was sold only in 3U, with grip 4 or 5 in Yonex USA’s listing and grip 5 in Japan, where the standard 900 also came in 2U. Yonex USA advised 19–24 lb, and Japan sold it at an open price.
Setiawan’s racquets, and the SE’s season
Yonex’s reports put Setiawan on the Armortec 900 Power for his 2007 Hong Kong Open title with Kido, the ArcSaber 7 for the January 2013 Malaysia Open title with Ahsan, and the Nanoray 800 in their October 2013 Denmark Open final. From 2014 he played the Nanoray 900, and Yonex quotes him saying both his control and his smashing became more aggressive with it. He was on the standard 900 in the May 2016 Thomas Cup final, and Yonex Japan’s launch release shows him with the SE at that June’s Indonesia Open. At Rio, Japan’s Badminton Spirit magazine listed him on the 900 SE, quoting him on a racquet that swung through cleanly and handled fast shuttles easily, and cautioned that its photos might not show the match racquet. The second-seeded pair went out in the group stage. Yonex lists the SE on Setiawan at the Yonex Open Japan in September, a first-round win with Ahsan. In October, paired with Saputro, he won one round at the Denmark Open before losing to Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda, and lost his French Open opener to Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen.
Three white Nanorays in one line
Yonex USA’s “Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan Limited Edition” line held six racquets, three in each player’s colors. Setiawan’s side had the 900 SE, a Nanoray 95DX SE and a Nanoray 7 SE; Ahsan’s had the 900 AH, a Nanoray 70DX AH and a Nanoray 7 AH. The 95DX SE is also Cool White, 3U and stiff, but it is the standard Nanoray 95DX in Setiawan’s design, with that model’s frame of high-modulus graphite, Nanocell and Solid Titanium; it has its own page. The standard 900 was Iron Gray from 2014, joined by a Blue/Navy design in June 2017; the SE exists in one finish and one weight.
Limited, in Japan and the USA
Yonex called the SE limited and gave no quantity. Its own channels document two markets: Yonex Japan’s release and Yonex USA’s landing page for the line, live from June 30 to at least October 2, 2016, with the 900 SE product page captured in July, August and September. No Yonex Indonesia release is documented, so “Indonesia only” is not supported, and neither Yonex announcement links the editions to the Rio Olympics. The verified sales shown above are pre-owned frames from Asia resale.
White frames that are not the 900 SE
The likeliest mistake is the 95DX SE, which shares the color, the SE suffix, the 3U weight and the stiff rating; only the model name on the frame separates them at a glance. The Nanoray 7 SE is a lower model in the same line. No counterfeit specific to the 900 SE is documented, and Yonex published no model-specific guide, so its general checks apply. Chinese retail copy sells the SE as Setiawan’s Rio Olympic limited edition; that is a sales line, not Yonex’s description.
After 2016
Yonex documents no later Setiawan design of the Nanoray 900 or of its successors; the standard 900 continued in Blue/Navy until Yonex dropped it in 2020. Indonesia’s federation split the pair at the end of the 2016 season, and Yonex’s October reports already show the SE with Saputro. The split did not last: Setiawan and Ahsan reunited in February 2018 and won a third world title together in 2019. The SE belongs to 2016, between their second world title and their third, the year Yonex marked the partnership with a color for each man.
Yonex’s item code is NR900SE, and the frame should read NANORAY 900SE and be marked Made in Japan. The finish is Cool White; the standard Nanoray 900 is Iron Gray (2014) or Blue/Navy (from 2017), and the Ahsan edition is Deep Red. Yonex rates it stiff and sold it in 3U only, an 88 g average, with grip 4 or 5 in the USA and 5 in Japan, so a 2U frame is a standard 900. Yonex lists Nanometric and Super HMG in the frame and X-Fullerene and Ultra PE fiber in the shaft. A white frame marked Nanoray 95DX SE or Nanoray 7 SE is a different model. Yonex’s own checks for its racquets are a laser-engraved production code on the cap above the handle and a hologram sticker that resists peeling.
The 900 SE is Setiawan’s half of a two-racquet set, and its interest for collectors is the pair it was made for and Setiawan’s long career. Buy on identity: ask for photographs of the NANORAY 900SE name, the 3U weight label and the cap code, and make sure a white Nanoray is not the 95DX SE. Treat “Rio Olympic edition” and “Indonesia only” wording as retail copy.
