Nanoray 800
Model NR-800
Where to find it
Speed before speed was cool: Nanoray 800
Built for velocity
The Nanoray 800 arrived in 2014 as Yonex's most attacking head-light model — a racquet built for players who wanted to win through raw shot velocity rather than smash power. Its frame profile was the thinnest-top and thickest-bottom aero construction Yonex had built to that point: minimal material at the frame top reduced drag during the swing, while the reinforced bottom generated maximum repulsion at impact. It was a frame with a specific, unapologetic argument.
Sonic Metal and X-Fullerene
The material spec was: HM Graphite frame reinforced with Sonic Metal for stiffness and a louder, sharper impact sound — an auditory cue that became a signature of the NR-800 experience. X-Fullerene shaft for precise flex-return. Stiff flex on the 4U version. Reviewers noted it was 'great for the competitive badminton player,' the stiff shaft and head-light frame enabling deep drives with a compact swing. One reviewer gave it four stars and noted it rewarded proper technique generously — a frame that demanded skill and returned speed.
The accessible head-light entry
At $220, the NR-800 is the most affordable Japan-made Nanoray piece in the database and the natural starting point for collectors building a head-light Yonex history shelf. Its successor, the NR-900, commands $280 with a more complete flagship spec. The 800 sits just below — same Made in Japan quality, same attacking intent, at a modest discount that makes it the rational first acquisition before stepping up.
Sonic Metal designation on frame. X-Fullerene shaft. Stiff flex. Head-light balance — tips toward handle in hang test. Thin-top/thick-bottom frame profile visible on inspection. 4U Made in Japan. Standard Yonex hologram.
Accessible entry into Japan-made Nanoray. Appreciate alongside the NR-900 as the head-light doubles story earns more collector attention. Best acquired alongside the NR-700RP for a complete Nanoray-era story.
