Nanoray 900 AH: Mohammad Ahsan’s Deep Red edition, named in Yonex’s 2016 results
Ahsan’s red, in Yonex’s own results
In June 2016 Yonex Japan announced a Deep Red design of the Nanoray 900 for Mohammad Ahsan, chosen to stand for his acrobatic style, alongside a Cool White one for his partner Hendra Setiawan. That autumn Yonex’s tournament reports printed “NANORAY 900AH” beside Ahsan’s name at the Yonex Open Japan, the Denmark Open and the French Open, the last two with a new partner, Berry Angriawan. No title came with it. The racquet records a short stretch of Ahsan’s career, between the pair’s second world title on the standard 900 in 2015 and the months after the Rio Olympics when the two played with other partners.
A Nanoray 900 for the world No. 2 pair
On June 23, 2016 Yonex Japan announced the NANORAY 900AH and 900SE as player-exclusive designs for Ahsan and Setiawan, then ranked second in the world in men’s doubles, and released them in limited quantity in early July. Yonex USA presented the line the next day as a commemoration: the pair had won the World Championships and the season-ending Superseries Finals in 2013, and both again in 2015, and had competed with the Nanoray 900 since 2014. Underneath the paint it is the standard 900, the racquet Yonex built for a steep smash that drops in front of the opponent. Yonex lists the same materials: high-modulus and high-strength carbon with Nanometric and Super HMG in the frame, high-modulus carbon with X-Fullerene and Ultra PE fiber in the shaft, and a T-Anchor at the joint. Yonex rates it stiff and lists it as made in Japan. The edition came in 3U only, with grip 4 or 5 in Yonex USA’s listing and grip 5 in Japan, where it sold at an open price. Yonex USA advised stringing it at 19–24 lb.
Ahsan with and without his edition
Before the 900, Yonex’s reports put Ahsan on the Nanospeed 9900 when he won his first Superseries title, with Setiawan, at the January 2013 Malaysia Open, and on the ArcSaber FB in their October 2013 Denmark Open final. Yonex quotes him calling the 900 the best match for his game. In the May 2016 Thomas Cup final, both on the standard 900, they won their rubber 21–18, 21–13 over Mads Pieler Kolding and Mads Conrad-Petersen; Denmark took the cup 3–2. Yonex Japan’s launch release shows them with the new designs at that June’s Indonesia Open. At Rio, Japan’s Badminton Spirit magazine listed Ahsan on the 900 AH, quoting him on a well-balanced racquet that lifted his attack and defense, with a caution that its photos might not show the match racquet; the second-seeded pair went out in the group stage. Yonex lists him on the AH at the Yonex Open Japan in September, a first-round win, and with Angriawan in October: a first-round loss at the Denmark Open, then two wins at the French Open, the second over the third seeds, Kolding and Conrad-Petersen.
Six racquets in one line
The AH’s twin is the Cool White Nanoray 900 SE, the same frame for Setiawan. Yonex USA gave the pair a “Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan Limited Edition” line of six racquets: the 900 AH and 900 SE, a Nanoray 70DX AH and a Nanoray 7 AH in Ahsan’s colors, and a Nanoray 95DX SE and a Nanoray 7 SE in Setiawan’s. Only the two 900s are Nanoray 900s. The standard 900 was Iron Gray from 2014, joined by a Blue/Navy design in June 2017, and Yonex Japan sold it in 2U as well as 3U; the AH exists in 3U and in one finish.
A limited run in Japan and the USA
Yonex called the edition limited and published no quantity. Its own channels document two markets: Yonex Japan’s release, and Yonex USA’s landing page for the line, live from June 30 to at least October 2, 2016, with the 900 AH product page captured in July, August and September. No Yonex Indonesia release is documented, so the “Indonesia only” label sometimes attached to the pair’s editions is not supported. The verified sales shown above are pre-owned frames from Asia resale.
Red Nanorays that are not the 900 AH
The main risk is a mix-up inside the line. Yonex’s Nanoray 7 AH is also Deep Red but is a different racquet: 4U, medium flex, with a plain graphite frame. The Nanoray 70DX AH, also Deep Red, is the stiff 4U Nanoray 70DX in the edition’s colors; it has its own page. Only a frame that reads Nanoray 900 is the edition. No counterfeit specific to the 900 AH is documented, and Yonex published no model-specific guide, so its general checks apply. Retail listings that call it the pair’s Rio Olympic racquet use a sales line, not Yonex’s description.
No successor edition
Yonex documents no later Ahsan design of the Nanoray 900 or of its successors. The standard 900 carried on, with the Blue/Navy design from June 2017, until Yonex dropped it in 2020. The partnership the edition celebrated was already changing when it appeared: after Rio, Yonex’s reports list Ahsan with Berry Angriawan and Setiawan with Rian Agung Saputro. Indonesia’s federation split the pair at the end of that season; they reunited in February 2018 and won a third world title together in 2019. The AH belongs to the 2016 chapter, the season Yonex dressed the pair in colors of their own.
Yonex’s item code is NR900AH, and the frame should read NANORAY 900AH and be marked Made in Japan. The finish is Deep Red; the standard Nanoray 900 is Iron Gray (2014) or Blue/Navy (from 2017), and the Setiawan edition is Cool White. Yonex rates it stiff and sold it in 3U only, an 88 g average, with grip 4 or 5 in the USA and 5 in Japan, so a 2U frame is a standard 900. Yonex lists Nanometric and Super HMG in the frame and X-Fullerene and Ultra PE fiber in the shaft. A Deep Red racquet named Nanoray 7 AH or Nanoray 70DX AH is a lower model. Yonex’s own checks for its racquets are a laser-engraved production code on the cap above the handle and a hologram sticker that resists peeling.
The 900 AH is Ahsan’s half of a two-racquet set, and its interest for collectors is the pair it was made for. Buy on identity: ask for photographs of the NANORAY 900AH name, the Deep Red finish, the 3U weight label and the cap code, and rule out the Nanoray 7 AH and 70DX AH. Treat “Rio edition” and “Indonesia only” wording as retail copy; Yonex released it in Japan and the USA a month before the Games.
