Nanoray 95DX: the stiff, Taiwan-made frame behind Hendra Setiawan’s Cool White edition

The frame under Setiawan’s white

The Nanoray 95DX (item NR95DX) is the standard racquet behind the Nanoray 95DX SE, the Cool White model Yonex named for Hendra Setiawan in its 2016 limited line. It was a stiff, 3U Nanoray for markets outside Japan, with Nanocell and Solid Titanium in a high-modulus graphite frame, and Yonex’s description opened with string tension: “Handles up to 33 pounds in tension.” It first appears on Yonex’s international Nanoray list in February 2016 and was last listed there in January 2019, in Black/Blue at first and in red by 2018.

Nanocell, Solid Titanium and a DX frame

Yonex published no launch release for the 95DX. Its international Nanoray list lacks it on January 31, 2016 and shows it on February 22, 2016, beside the new Nanoray 300 Neo, so 2016 is its first documented year. Yonex’s international page lists stiff flex, a frame of high-modulus graphite, Nanocell and Solid Titanium, a high-modulus graphite shaft with Nanomesh and carbon nanotube, 3U (average 88 g) in grips 4 and 5, and stringing advice of 22–33 lb. Its technology list adds Isometric, the Aero Frame, the Built-in T-Joint, the Power Boost Cap and a DX Frame, which Yonex describes as a wider, thicker trench that spreads impact shock. The racquet selector in Yonex’s 2018 catalog places the 95DX slightly on the head-light side of even, in what Yonex called “the latest head-light series.”

No player of its own

Yonex names no player on the standard 95DX. Setiawan’s name reached the frame only through the 2016 limited edition, and Yonex’s announcement of that line said he and Mohammad Ahsan had competed with the Nanoray 900 since 2014; the 95DX SE has its own page. Yonex China’s page for the 95DX (item NR95DXEX) placed it at the advanced level and called it a speed type.

Black/Blue, then red, and a Cool White edition

Yonex’s international page of March 2016 gives the color as Black/Blue, Yonex China’s as blue/black (color 054) and Yonex’s 2017 catalog as Blue/Black. Yonex’s 2018 catalog and its international page of December 2018 list the 95DX in red, under the same item code and specification. The 95DX SE (item NR95DXSE) repeats the base’s spec lines in Setiawan’s Cool White. Yonex’s 2016 line had no Ahsan version of the 95DX: his Deep Red went on the 900, the 70DX and the Nanoray 7. The Nanoray 70DX, listed below the 95DX, has a plain high-modulus graphite frame, a Control Support Cap and 4U; it has its own page.

Three years on the international list

The 95DX was a model for markets outside Japan: Yonex Japan did not list it, and its Yonex sources are the international site, Yonex China and Yonex’s 2017 and 2018 catalogs. Yonex published no production end. The international Nanoray list shows it until January 18, 2019; by January 25, 2019 it was gone, in the same pruning that removed the 70DX, the 800 and the 700 FX, so 2019 is the last year it is documented on sale new. No Yonex launch price in US dollars or yen is documented. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Mix-ups rather than fakes

No counterfeit of the Nanoray 95DX is documented. The practical risk is identity. A Cool White frame that reads 95DX is the Setiawan edition, and a white Nanoray that reads 900 is the Japan-made 900 SE. A red 95DX is the 2018 standard design, not an Ahsan edition. A 4U frame that reads 70DX is the lower model, without Solid Titanium in its frame.

The upper DX model of 2016–2019

From 2016 to 2019 the 95DX was the higher of the two DX models on Yonex’s international list, above the 70DX, which had arrived in 2014 with the short-lived Nanoray 90DX (item NR90DX, listed from April 2014 to January 2015; it has its own page). Both remaining DX models left the list together in January 2019. For a collector the 95DX is chiefly the plain base of Setiawan’s 2016 edition, documented in two colors over its three years.

Authentication

Check the item code NR95DX and the model name on the frame. Yonex lists stiff flex, 3U only (average 88 g), grips 4 and 5, a frame of high-modulus graphite, Nanocell and Solid Titanium, and a high-modulus graphite shaft with Nanomesh and carbon nanotube, and recommends 22–33 lb. Yonex China lists it as made in Taiwan. Documented colors are Black/Blue (2016–2017) and red (2018). Cool White with the 95DX name is the 95DX SE (NR95DXSE); a 4U frame that reads 70DX is the Nanoray 70DX. Yonex’s own checks apply: a laser-engraved production code on the cap above the handle and a hologram sticker that resists peeling.

Outlook

Treat the 95DX as the plain model behind a 2016 player edition. Confirm the NR95DX code, the 95DX name and the 3U label in photographs, and match the color to Black/Blue or the 2018 red. Listings that call it Setiawan’s racquet are describing the SE edition, and Yonex documents no player on either frame. Check the head and the T-joint of this stiff frame for cracks, and the grommets and cap for wear.
