Nanospeed 990: the Extra Stiff, Taiwan-made export Nanospeed aimed at doubles experts

One catalog entry, rated Extra Stiff

The Nanospeed 990 (item code NS990) is known from a single Yonex source: the 2011 digital catalog on Yonex’s international site, which rates it Extra Stiff and sells it as “sharp & quick repulsion for doubles experts.” In that catalog it is the only Taiwan-made Nanospeed rated Extra Stiff; the other Extra Stiff model was the Japan-made 9900 flagship. Yonex printed it on the same page as the Japan-made 6600, 5500 and 2000, not with the Taiwan-made 850, 500 and 100 and the China-made 80.

Super HMG and carbon nanotube

Yonex gives no launch date. The catalog was online by April 2011, so 2011 is the first documented year. It lists a frame of high-modulus graphite with Super HMG and a shaft of high-modulus graphite with carbon nanotube and Super HMG, in one weight class, 3U (85–89.9 g), with grips G3–G5. The technology icons printed for it are carbon nanotube, Isometric and the built-in T-joint. Yonex printed no price and no balance word for it; the catalog places it on a head-heavy/head-light map and gives it a stringing recommendation in its spec table.

Doubles experts, no named player

Yonex’s only level wording for the 990 is its catalog line for doubles experts. No Yonex page, tournament report or staff list names a player with it, and no Yonex source pairs it with a team or event.

Gloss Orange only

Gloss Orange is the only color Yonex lists, and the catalog page singles out an “ultra distinctive gloss orange metallic frame design.” The 2011 catalog shows the Japan-made 9900 in Metal Orange, also Extra Stiff, but with an X-Fullerene frame, a fullerene shaft and 2U or 3U. The Taiwan-made 850 in the same catalog is Stiff and Gold, with Super HMG in a nanotube frame. Yonex does not say the 990 replaced either; each has its own page.

Export only, last documented in 2011

The 990 was an export model. It never appeared on Yonex Japan’s racquet list, and Yonex’s international Nanospeed list of April 2011 did not show it; by July 2011 that list had given way to a link to the 2011 catalog. Yonex’s 2012 digital catalog had replaced that link by April 2012, and no later Yonex listing of the 990 is known, so 2011 is the last year it is documented. Listings call it Nanospeed 990, NS990 or NS 990. No verified sales are recorded yet.

One digit from the flagship

No counterfeit of the Nanospeed 990 is documented. The real risk is the name: NS990 is one digit from NS9900, and both are orange and Extra Stiff in Yonex’s 2011 catalog. Check the item code and the origin marking; Yonex lists the 9900 as made in Japan and the 990 as made in Taiwan. Shop descriptions that give it a balance are retail copy, since Yonex printed no balance word for it.

A late, thinly documented export Nanospeed

The 990 appeared as Yonex’s international site stopped publishing a Nanospeed list of its own, and Yonex documents it only in that 2011 catalog. For a collector it is an export Nanospeed with one listed color, one weight class and no player connection, and the stiffest Taiwan-made Nanospeed in Yonex’s 2011 catalog.

Authentication

Check the item code NS990 on the frame, not NS9900. Yonex’s 2011 catalog lists it as Extra Stiff, 3U (85–89.9 g) with grips G3, G4 or G5, made in Taiwan, in Gloss Orange. The frame is high-modulus graphite with Super HMG; the shaft high-modulus graphite with carbon nanotube and Super HMG. Listed technologies: carbon nanotube, Isometric, built-in T-joint. Yonex printed no balance word for it. A Japan marking, a Metal Orange finish, an X-Fullerene label or a 2U class points to the 9900.

Outlook

Read the number twice: the 990 and the 9900 are different racquets, and Yonex’s 2011 catalog shows both in orange. Check the head, the T-joint and the grommets for cracks and wear, as with any frame of this age, and expect a 3U frame only. Yonex documents no player or edition of the 990, so treat a tour connection in a listing as unproven.
