Nanospeed 5500: Yonex Japan’s one-season Nanospeed with fullerene in frame and shaft
“Double fullerene” for one season
The Nanospeed 5500 (item code NS5500) was a Japan-made Nanospeed that Yonex Japan sold for a single season. Its product page, tagged as a new product in March 2011, built the pitch around a “double fullerene”: fullerene in the frame as well as the shaft, for high maneuverability and a sharp rebound. Yonex Japan priced it at ¥18,000 before tax and filed it among its 2011 production ends, the same year it first appeared.
Carbon, fullerene and a built-in T-joint
Yonex Japan listed a carbon frame with fullerene and a high-modulus carbon shaft with fullerene, joined by a built-in T-joint. Its technology list names fullerene, the built-in T-joint, Isometric, Solid Feel Core and an aero shape, and the page carries Yonex’s “10 mm Long” mark. The price was ¥18,900 including tax (¥18,000 before tax), made in Japan, in 3U with grip sizes 4 and 5. Yonex recommended 17–22 lb, with BG65Ti for hard hitters and NBG98 for control players. Yonex’s 2011 digital catalog rates it Medium, lists 3U (85–89.9 g) with grips G3–G5, and gave no balance word for it.
Pitched at intermediates
No Yonex page, report or release names a player with the Nanospeed 5500. Yonex Japan’s skill grid marked it ◎ for intermediate players, ○ for beginners and a dash for advanced players, unlike the 6600 above it, which Yonex Japan also marked ○ for advanced players.
One color in the 2011 middle band
White/Grey is the only design Yonex documents. On Yonex Japan’s 2011 list it sat between the 6600 (Flexible, elastomer frame, ¥20,000 before tax) and the 2000 (a plain carbon frame with a fullerene shaft, ¥12,000 before tax). The Blue Nanospeed 4500 left that list as the 5500 arrived, and the export Nanospeed 5000 shared its Medium, 3U rating; Yonex listed both with fullerene in the shaft only, so fullerene in the frame is the 5500’s listed difference. Yonex never said the 5500 replaced either. Each has its own page.
Listed in March 2011, ended the same year
The 5500 was absent from Yonex Japan’s racquet list in December 2010, had its own page by March 2011, and was still listed in September 2011; the list of February 2012 no longer carried it, and Yonex Japan’s old-model index files it under the 2011 production ends. Yonex’s 2011 digital catalog, published on its international site by April 2011, also lists it, marked made in Japan, although the international Nanospeed list never showed it. Listings call it Nanospeed 5500, NS5500 or ナノスピード5500. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Mix-ups, not copies
No counterfeit of the Nanospeed 5500 is documented. The likelier mistakes are the neighboring numbers: the export NS5000 (Silver/Orange) and the Blue NS4500 share its Medium, 3U rating, and the Taiwan-made NS500 is a different export model. A frame without the NS5500 code, or in a color other than White/Grey, belongs to another Nanospeed.
A short stop between the 4500 and the clean-out
The 5500’s run was brief: it arrived on Yonex Japan’s list as the 4500 left, ended in 2011, and was gone a year before the 6600, 3000 and 2000 left in the 2012–13 clean-out. Yonex named no successor. Fullerene in the frame was not unique to it: Yonex’s 2011 catalog lists the Stiff 7000 with a fullerene frame too. For a collector it is a documented Japan-made model with one design, one weight class and no player connection.
Check the item code NS5500 on the frame, not NS5000, NS4500 or NS500. Yonex documents a single design, White/Grey, in 3U only (85–89.9 g; grip sizes 4 and 5 in Japan, G3–G5 in the 2011 catalog), made in Japan, rated Medium. The frame is carbon with fullerene and the shaft high-modulus carbon with fullerene, with a built-in T-joint; Yonex Japan also lists Isometric, Solid Feel Core and an aero shape, plus its 10 mm Long mark. Yonex recommends 17–22 lb. The matching grommet set was AC416NSA, and the page marks the frame as Japan Badminton Association approved. Yonex’s 2011 catalog places it on a head-heavy/head-light map but prints no balance word for it.
Read the number carefully: 500, 4500, 5000 and 5500 are four different Nanospeeds, and only the 5500 is White/Grey. Check the head, the T-joint and the grommets for cracks and wear, as with any frame of this age, and expect a 3U frame only. Yonex documents no player or edition of the 5500, so treat a tour connection in a listing as unproven.
