Voltric 7LD: the standard Voltric 7 in Lin Dan Exclusive II navy and red

A Voltric 7 under Lin Dan’s name

The Voltric 7LD is the mid-range Voltric of Lin Dan Exclusive II, the second limited collection Yonex built around him in 2015. Yonex’s own product page for it never mentions him. It repeats the standard Voltric 7’s one-line description, “all round model for well-balanced repulsion and handling,” word for word, and lists the same flex, frame and shaft materials, weight class and factory. On paper, what separates the two is the color, navy blue or bright red, a narrower choice of grip sizes and the LD in the name. That makes the 7LD the Exclusive II racquet closest to an ordinary catalog model, and the one most easily confused with it.

Exclusive II and the 7LD’s listing

Yonex announced Lin Dan Exclusive II on October 15, 2015, a month after he won the Yonex Open Japan for the first time in nine years, and said the second round of limited-edition gear would be on sale worldwide in late November. The announcement named only a custom Voltric Z-Force II. The Exclusive II category on Yonex’s international site went further: its first capture, on October 21, 2015, already lists five racquets, the Z-Force II LD, the Voltric 7LD and 1LD, and the Nanoray 9000LD and 7000LD, which have their own pages. The 7LD’s own page, item VT7LD, gives medium flex, a high-modulus graphite and tungsten frame, a graphite shaft, 4U (average 83 g) in grips 4 and 5, and stringing advice of 19–24 lb, made in Taiwan, under Yonex’s Voltric series overview of the Tri-Voltage System. The 7LD is not on Yonex Japan’s Lin Dan page, which lists only the Z-Force II LD among racquets.

His collection, not his match racquet

Yonex ties its lower LD frames to Lin Dan only through the collection name and his LD symbol, and no Yonex report or equipment list puts him, or any other player, on the 7LD. His documented racquets in this period were Z-Force II models. Yonex’s report of his sixth All England title, in March 2016, links his racquet to the Exclusive II Z-Force II LD, which has its own pages in bright red and in white. Listings that present the 7LD as the racquet he played are not supported by any Yonex source.

Two colors, and the standard Voltric 7 beside it

Yonex listed the 7LD in navy blue and in bright red; a UK retailer sold the red as bright red and black. The standard Voltric 7, sold from 2011, appears in silver on Yonex’s 2012 page and in red and white in Yonex UK’s 2015 brochure, both as item VT7, medium flex, 4U and made in Taiwan. Yonex’s 2012 listing offered the standard model in grips 3, 4 and 5; the 7LD came in grips 4 and 5 only. Within Exclusive II, the Voltric 1LD is a 3U, China-made frame and the Z-Force II LD the Japan-made flagship, with two Nanoray LDs completing the racquets. The yellow Voltric 8 LD and 2 LD belonged to the first collection of May 2015, not to Exclusive II.

On sale from late 2015 into 2017

Captures of the 7LD’s page run from October 22, 2015 to October 2016 with unchanged specifications, and the Exclusive II category on Yonex’s international site still listed the 7LD on January 13, 2017. By May 2017 the category held only strings. Yonex announced no production end and published no quantity beyond calling the collection limited, so early 2017 is the last time the 7LD is documented on sale new. The verified sales shown above are pre-owned frames from Asia resale.

Counterfeits and mistaken identity

No counterfeit of the 7LD is documented. The practical risk is description rather than forgery: the 7LD shares the standard Voltric 7’s listed construction, so a plain Voltric 7, or the different Voltric 7 DG, can be offered under Lin Dan’s name. The color, the LD branding and the item code carry the identification, and the checklist below sets them out.

What came after

Nothing on Yonex’s pages carries the 7LD forward. By November 2016 Yonex’s Voltric list showed a new set of Lin Dan racquets, the Voltric LD Force and four LD-named Voltrics (LD3, LD9, LD100 and LD200), while the 7LD stayed in the Exclusive II category. The Voltric 7 number itself returned on different frames, the 3U Voltric 7 DG of 2016 and the 4U Voltric 7 NEO sold by Yonex UK, which the Voltric 7 page covers. For a collector the 7LD is the Voltric 7 in Lin Dan’s Exclusive II colors: a documented Yonex edition, but not a racquet he is known to have played.

Authentication

Check the item code VT7LD and the Made in Taiwan mark. Yonex listed the 7LD in navy blue or bright red, 4U only (average 83 g), grips 4 and 5, medium flex. Flex, materials, weight class and factory match the standard Voltric 7, so color and Lin Dan’s LD branding separate them: a silver or red-and-white frame without LD branding is a standard VT7, and an LD-branded frame in grip 3 does not match Yonex’s 7LD listing. A 3U, China-made Lin Dan Voltric is the Voltric 1LD, and a Japan-made one a Z-Force II LD. A 3U frame coded VT7DG is the Voltric 7 DG. Yonex’s own checks apply: a laser-engraved production code on the cone and a hologram sticker that resists lifting.

Outlook

Treat the 7LD as the standard Voltric 7 in Exclusive II colors, not as Lin Dan’s racquet. Confirm the VT7LD code and the LD branding before paying for the name, since a plain Voltric 7 has the same listed construction. Ask for daylight photographs of the frame, the cone and the weight label, and look for cracks and repainting. Be wary of listings that call it his match racquet: no Yonex report supports that.
