Voltric 9 LTD: the Taiwan-made White/Gold Voltric of Yonex’s 2012 limited line

The other White/Gold Voltric

Yonex’s 2012 limited line had one racquet in Japan and three abroad. Outside Japan, Yonex’s international site listed the Voltric Z-Force LTD beside two lower-tier Voltrics in “special cosmetics,” the 9 LTD and the 3 LTD. The Voltric 9 LTD, item VT9LTD, is the standard Voltric 9 in a White/Gold design: Yonex’s page for it repeats the 9’s description and every spec line, stiff, 3U and made in Taiwan. Yonex gave the Japan-made Z-Force LTD the same color name, White/Gold, so the 9 LTD is the edition most easily mistaken for the racquet Yonex’s reports put in Lee Chong Wei’s hands in 2012. Yonex published no quantity for it and tied no player to it.

Special cosmetics for a gold-themed line

On March 23, 2012 Yonex Japan announced its “2012 YONEX Limited Edition Models,” a gold-themed line of racquets, shoes, bags and clothing on sale from mid-May; its one racquet was the Voltric Z-Force Limited. A badminton blog listed the Voltric 9 and 3 in the same limited collection on March 31. Yonex’s English announcement of June 26, 2012 named “special cosmetics of three VOLTRICs, Z-FORCE, 9 and 3” and said top players would use the new products from that summer. Beneath the paint the 9 LTD is the Voltric 9: a frame of high-modulus graphite, Sound Filter and tungsten, a high-modulus graphite shaft, stiff flex and 3U (85–89.9 g) with grips G3 to G5, made in Taiwan. Yonex lists five technologies for it: the Tri-Voltage System, Sound Filter, Isometric, the Built-in T-Joint and the Control Support Cap. The frame’s own story is on the Voltric 9’s page.

No player on the 9 LTD

Yonex’s reports name no player on the 9 LTD. Its English announcement said only that top players would use the line’s products. Yonex Japan’s release named Lee Chong Wei, Taufik Hidayat and Peter Gade for the line’s sleeveless shirt and Saina Nehwal for its dress, not for any racquet. The players Yonex’s reports do put on a 2012 limited racquet, Lee among them, used the Z-Force LTD, which has its own page.

One color, two gold look-alikes

The 9 LTD has one Yonex color, White/Gold, against the standard 9’s Gloss Blue. Its line-mates were the Japan-made, extra-stiff Voltric Z-Force LTD (item VTZFLTD), which Yonex’s international site also called White/Gold and Yonex Japan called Premium Gold, and the Voltric 3 LTD, a medium-flex frame from lower in the Voltric list that Yonex’s photo shows in white; both have their own pages. “Premium Gold” is the Z-Force Limited’s Japanese color name, later reused for the 2016 Voltric LD Force, and was never Yonex’s name for the 9 LTD. The 2016 Voltric LD9 (item VTLD9), a Lin Dan edition in gold, is a separate racquet, and the red Voltric 9 Neo of 2014 succeeded the standard 9, not the LTD.

Listed from 2012 into early 2014

Yonex Japan’s limited line carried only the Z-Force Limited, so the 9 LTD was sold outside Japan. Yonex’s international Limited Edition Models list held the same three racquets from its first archived copy, January 18, 2013, to January 22, 2014; by February 22, 2014 the list was empty, and the 9 LTD’s own page had gone by February 8. That makes 2014 the last year it is documented on sale new. Yonex described the difference from the standard 9 only as cosmetics. For a collector its interest is as the export piece of the 2012 gold line, and identity is the main care. No verified sales are recorded yet.

The Olympic label and the White/Gold mix-up

No counterfeit of the 9 LTD is documented. Two mix-ups matter more. Retail copy has sold the 2012 limited Voltrics, the Z-Force LTD and the 3 LTD among them, as Olympic editions, a label Yonex never used: its English and Japanese announcements and its product page make no Olympic link. And because Yonex gave the Z-Force LTD the same White/Gold color name, a white-and-gold Voltric needs its code and factory marking read: VT9LTD and Made in Taiwan for this edition, VTZFLTD and Made in Japan for the flagship.

The export side of a gold year

The 9 LTD shows how Yonex stretched one limited theme across its range in 2012: a Japan-made flagship sold everywhere, and two Taiwan-made frames from lower in the Voltric list for export markets. It is the White/Gold counterpart of the Gloss Blue Voltric 9, with nothing changed beneath the paint. For a 2012 Voltric collection it pairs with the Z-Force LTD and the 3 LTD, the only racquets on Yonex’s limited list of the time.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is VT9LTD. Yonex’s page gives White/Gold, stiff flex, 3U (85–89.9 g) with grips G3, G4 or G5, made in Taiwan, a frame of high-modulus graphite, Sound Filter and tungsten, and a high-modulus graphite shaft: the same lines as the standard Voltric 9. Yonex listed no 4U 9 LTD. A white-and-gold frame marked Made in Japan, with the Z-Force’s compact head and the code VTZFLTD, is the Z-Force LTD; a Gloss Blue frame coded VT9 is the standard 9; a gold Lin Dan frame coded VTLD9 is the 2016 LD9; a red frame coded VT9NEO is the 9 Neo; a white limited frame named Voltric 3 is the 3 LTD. Yonex’s own checks: the production code on the cap above the handle is laser-engraved rather than printed, the hologram sticker resists peeling, and the YONEX logo is printed cleanly.

Outlook

Read the code and the factory marking first: VT9LTD and Made in Taiwan make this edition, while a white-and-gold Voltric made in Japan is the Z-Force LTD. Treat “Olympic,” “Premium Gold” or player claims as seller wording, since Yonex tied none of them to the 9 LTD. Most surviving frames have had use, so check the head and the T-joint of this stiff frame for cracks and look at the paint, the grommets and the butt cap.
