Voltric 3 LTD: the entry-level Voltric among Yonex’s three 2012 limited editions

Three Voltrics in special cosmetics

On June 26, 2012 Yonex announced limited-edition models of racquets, a bag, shoes and clothing, and for racquets said that “special cosmetics of three VOLTRICs, Z-FORCE, 9 and 3 are lined up.” The Voltric 3 LTD was the lowest of the three, a limited version of the Voltric 3 that sat at the bottom of Yonex’s export Voltric list. Yonex’s international site kept a Limited Edition Models list that held exactly these three racquets, the Voltric Z-Force LTD, Voltric 9 LTD and Voltric 3 LTD, from at least January 2013. The 3 LTD’s own product page was never archived, so less is documented about it than about either sibling.

The 2012 limited line

Yonex Japan had announced its own 2012 limited line on March 23, 2012 with a single racquet, the Voltric Z-Force Limited; the 9 and 3 LTDs were export models, and Yonex Japan never listed a Voltric 3 of any kind. Yonex’s English announcement made the clothing its headline, the lightest in Yonex’s history at 90 g against 140 g for a conventional men’s sleeveless shirt, “almost the same as 3U badminton racquet.” A US retailer had the 3 LTD on sale by late July 2012. Yonex described the racquet only as a special cosmetic of the Voltric 3, whose own page lists medium flex, a graphite and tungsten frame and an H.T. Graphite shaft.

No player on record

Yonex names no player with the Voltric 3 LTD. The announcement said top players would use the new products from that summer, but the players Yonex’s reports name with the 2012 limited racquets used the Z-Force LTD, which has its own page. The 9 LTD’s archived page has no ambassador list either.

A white frame like the 9 LTD

Yonex’s list photo shows the 3 LTD as a white frame with gold and purple trim. At that size it looks the same as the 9 LTD, which Yonex’s own page names White/Gold, while the standard Voltric 3 was red. The edition’s product page sat under the plain address “voltric-3” and was never archived, so Yonex documents neither its item code nor a color name; US retailers coded it VT3LTD. The Z-Force LTD wore a similar white, gold and purple scheme but is a Japan-made, extra-stiff flagship frame. The standard Voltric 3 and the 9 LTD have their own pages.

Listed into January 2014

The 3 LTD stayed on Yonex’s international Limited Edition Models list through 2013, even after the standard Voltric 3 left the Voltric list in early January 2014. The limited list still showed all three racquets on January 22, 2014 and was empty by February 22. Yonex published no production quantity, and no launch price is documented. No verified sales are recorded yet.

The Olympic label and look-alikes

Retail listings title it a “Voltric 3 Olympic Limited Edition,” and Yonex’s English announcement came a month before the London Games, but that announcement never mentions the Olympics and calls the three racquets limited-edition models with special cosmetics. No counterfeit of the 3 LTD is documented. The practical risks are the 9 LTD, which shares the look but is a stiff frame with high-modulus graphite and Sound Filter, and loose “Voltric LTD” listings that mean the Z-Force LTD.

The least documented of the three

The 3 LTD is the lowest-tier racquet of Yonex’s 2012 limited line and the least documented: no archived Yonex page gives its item code, weight class or factory. With the 9 LTD it formed the export half of the line, beside the Japan-made Z-Force LTD that Yonex’s reports put on tour. For a collector it completes the trio, and its identity rests on the model number printed on the frame.

Authentication

Yonex documents the name VOLTRIC 3 LTD, its place as a special cosmetic of the Voltric 3 and, in its list photo, a white frame with gold and purple trim. Read the model number on the frame: the 9 LTD looks the same in Yonex’s photos but is a stiff frame, while the 3 LTD carries the standard 3’s medium rating. US retailers coded it VT3LTD; Yonex’s own page for the edition was never archived, so treat its weight class and factory as unconfirmed by Yonex. A Japan-made frame with the Z-Force’s compact head is the Z-Force LTD, and a red frame is the standard Voltric 3. Yonex’s own checks apply: a laser-engraved production code on the cap above the handle and a hologram sticker that resists peeling.

Outlook

A collector’s piece mainly as part of Yonex’s 2012 limited trio. Confirm the model number and the white, gold and purple finish, and ask for photographs of the frame print, the cone and the grip label. Treat “Olympic” and player-use claims as unproven, since Yonex made neither. Check a frame of this age for cracks at the head and T-joint.
