Voltric i-Force: the Japan-made 5U Voltric that Yonex built head-heavy for the smash

A 5U frame with a head-heavy build

Yonex summed up the Voltric i-Force in one sentence: “The lightweight racquet (5U) with a head-heavy construction that enables you to easily hit a power smash.” Yonex Japan’s page said the same in Japanese, under the slogan “a power smash, finished with flair.” Item VTIF was dated for sale in Japan in early July 2013, made in Japan in one color, Bright Pink, and one weight class, 5U. It then stayed in Yonex Japan’s range until January 2019, outlasting the Voltric 70 and 80 E-tunes on that list.

Compact frame, slim long shaft

The i-Force used the Voltric line’s Tri-Voltage System, which makes the frame thick and stiff at 10 and 2 o’clock and at the shaft joint and adds tungsten there for a head-heavy balance. Yonex’s technology list for it adds a Compact Frame, a Super Slim Long Shaft and a Control Support Cap, with Isometric, a new grommet pattern, Solid Feel Core, an Aero+Box frame and a built-in T-joint. Yonex lists a high-modulus graphite frame with tungsten and a high-modulus graphite shaft, rates the flex Medium and offered only 5U (75–79.9 g, later given as an average of 78 g), with grips G5 and G6 and a recommended 19–24 lb. Yonex Japan’s page of late June 2013 printed 4U and 3U; by late July it read 5U, as every later Yonex listing did.

No player on record

No Yonex source documents a player on the i-Force. Yonex Japan’s product page marked it for intermediate players, with a double circle for women and a single circle for men, and no mark for advanced players or beginners. Its Bright Pink finish and 5U class put it beside the Voltric 30, which Yonex Japan had pitched in pink to men and women alike; it has its own page.

One pink code, and a shop-association BP

Yonex listed item VTIF in Bright Pink on every page it published, in 5U only. The Japan Badminton Association’s approval list of January 2016 also carries a Voltric i-Force BP (item VTIFBP) at open price; BP is the suffix Japanese listings give to Yonex colors for the country’s badminton specialist-shop association, and no Yonex page shows its design. The Voltric Force (VT-F) of 2015 is a different racquet, a black, stiff 4U frame made in Taiwan, and the Z-Force II is Yonex’s extra-stiff flagship of the period; both have their own pages.

Five and a half years in Yonex Japan’s range

The i-Force was a regular-production racquet. Yonex Japan priced it at ¥18,000 before tax (¥18,900 with tax at launch), between the Voltric 60 at ¥19,000 and the Voltric 30 at ¥14,000. Yonex’s international Voltric list added it in August 2013, beside the 60, 70 and 80 its product page named as related models, and still showed it on January 9, 2018; the list of March 30, 2018, with the new DG models, did not. Yonex UK’s 2015 brochure carried it as one of five Japan-made Voltrics, with the Z-Force II, the two E-tunes and the Voltric 55. In Japan it lasted longer: Yonex Japan’s racquet list still showed it on January 16, 2019, beside the Z-Force II, GlanZ, FB and 30, and no longer did on January 24, 2019. Yonex published no production-end notice, so 2019 is its last documented year on sale. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Pink look-alikes

No counterfeit of the i-Force is documented. Identity is the practical check. The Voltric 30 is also a Japan-made 5U Voltric in pink-based colors, but it is coded VT30. The Voltric Force (VT-F) lacks only the “i-” in its name but is a black, stiff, Taiwan-made 4U frame, and the pink Voltric Force LCW is a Lee Chong Wei edition of that frame, also 4U. The Medium-flex Voltric 70 is white and came in 3U and 4U. A 4U or 3U frame offered as an i-Force is a different racquet, whatever an early listing may say.

The light Voltric that outlasted its line

The i-Force arrived in the first Voltric generation, when Yonex Japan’s list ran from the Z-Force through the 80, 70 and 60 to the 30, and it outlived the 60, 70 and 80 in Yonex’s ranges by about four years. At the end it was one of five Voltrics left on Yonex Japan’s list, with the Z-Force II, GlanZ, FB and 30. No later racquet carried the i-Force name on Yonex’s lists. For a collector it is the medium-flex, head-heavy 5U of the Japan-made Voltrics, distinct from the cheaper Voltric 30 and from the later FB, which Yonex also made in the lighter F class.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is VTIF. Yonex lists one color, Bright Pink, one weight class, 5U (75–79.9 g; average 78 g), grips G5 and G6, Medium flex and Made in Japan, and recommends 19–24 lb. The frame is high-modulus graphite with tungsten and the shaft high-modulus graphite. A pink frame coded VT30 is the Voltric 30; a frame coded VT-F or VTF and made in Taiwan is the Voltric Force; a 4U or 3U frame is not an i-Force. Yonex Japan’s replacement grommet set for the model is AC416ACB. Yonex’s own checks: a hologram sticker that resists peeling, cleanly printed YY and YONEX logos, and a laser-engraved production code on the cap above the handle.

Outlook

Check the code and the weight label first: VTIF and 5U, in Bright Pink, marked Made in Japan. Most surviving frames have had club use, so look at the head and the T-joint for cracks and at the grommets. Yonex documented no player for the i-Force, so treat any tour link as unproven, and ask for a photo of the code when a listing says only “Voltric Force,” which is a different racquet.
