Voltric 2: Yonex’s 4U black-and-red Voltric of 2014, whose specs the Lin Dan 2 LD reused

A one-year rung

The Voltric 2 held the lowest slot on Yonex’s international Voltric list for one year. It replaced the Voltric 3 there between December 31, 2013 and January 15, 2014, and had given way to the Voltric 1 by January 30, 2015. Yonex made it in Taiwan for markets outside Japan. Its specifications outlived it: in 2015 Yonex listed the yellow Voltric 2 LD of the first Lin Dan Exclusive with the same specifications and product description, and that edition has its own page.

Tri-Voltage at 4U

Yonex’s page describes it in one sentence: “Quick racquet handling by lightweight racquet (4U) and TRI-VOLTAGE SYSTEM provides powerful shots.” The specification is item VT2, medium flex, a graphite and tungsten frame, an H.T. Graphite shaft, 4U (average 83 g) in grips 4 and 5, black/red, made in Taiwan. Against the Voltric 3 it replaced, Yonex kept the flex and the frame and shaft materials and moved from 3U to the lighter 4U class. Yonex documents no balance for it.

No player on record

No player is documented with the Voltric 2 in Yonex’s pages or reports; it was a club racquet at the bottom of the export range. The Lin Dan name belongs to the 2015 edition, and no Yonex source shows him using either racquet.

Black/red, then yellow

Yonex showed the Voltric 2 only in black/red. In August 2014, while it was still on the list, Yonex’s Lee Chong Wei gear brought a dark pink Voltric 1 LCW, the first Voltric numbered 1, five months before the standard Voltric 1 took the Voltric 2’s slot; it has its own page. The yellow Voltric 2 LD of 2015 repeats the VT2’s specifications. The later Voltric 2 DG Slim (VT2DGSL) is a different racquet.

Retail stock into 2015

US retailers sold it as a 2014 model, and one still offered new stock in September 2015, months after Yonex’s list had dropped it. Yonex USA’s own site did not list it: its Voltric lists of July 2014 and September 2015 still showed the older Voltric 3. No Yonex launch price is documented. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Fakes and mix-ups

No counterfeit of the Voltric 2 is documented. The look-alikes are its relatives: a yellow frame with Lin Dan’s LD marks is the 2 LD, a dark pink 4U frame is one of the 2014 LCW editions, and a white/gold or white/red 4U frame is the standard Voltric 1, which Yonex rated flexible. The red Voltric 3 before it was 3U.

Between the 3 and the 1

The Voltric 2 was the 4U step at the low end of Yonex’s export Voltrics, between the 3U Voltric 3 of 2012–2013 and the Voltric 1 of 2015. For a collector its main interest is as the plain counterpart of the yellow 2 LD.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is VT2. Yonex lists medium flex, a graphite and tungsten frame, an H.T. Graphite shaft, 4U (average 83 g) in grips 4 and 5, black/red, and Made in Taiwan, and documents no other weight class or color. The same specification in yellow with LD marks is the Voltric 2 LD (VT2LD). A red 3U frame is the Voltric 3, a dark pink 4U frame is a 2014 LCW edition, and a white/gold or white/red 4U frame is the Voltric 1. Yonex’s own checks apply: a laser-engraved code on the cone and a hologram sticker that resists lifting.

Outlook

A plain club racquet whose main collecting interest is as the base of the Lin Dan 2 LD. Look for the VT2 code, the 4U label and the black/red finish, and ask for photographs of the frame print, the cone and the grip label. No player is documented with it. Check a played frame for cracks at the head and T-joint.
