Voltric LD3: the medium-flex middle of Lin Dan’s five-racquet gold line of 2016

The middle of the 2016 LD line

The Voltric LD3 stood third of the five Lin Dan Voltrics that Yonex added in the summer of 2016, after the LD Force and the LD9, both on Yonex’s Voltric list and in Yonex China’s suggested retail order. Yonex’s international site listed it as item VTLD3: medium flex, a graphite and tungsten frame, an H.T. Graphite shaft, and two weights, 5U (average 78 g) and 4U (average 83 g), in grips 4 and 5. It came in the line’s Premium Gold, and Yonex China gives it as made in Taiwan. With the LD9 it is one of only two models in the line offered in 5U.

Voltric 3 rows and the series technology

Yonex named no frame the LD3 was built on. The spec rows on its page match those of the standard Voltric 3 of 2012: medium flex, a graphite and tungsten frame and an H.T. Graphite shaft. Yonex’s page for that Voltric 3 shows a red 3U racquet; the LD3 came in 5U and 4U instead. Its technology tab lists the Voltric series features: the Tri-Voltage System, the square Isometric head, the Aero+Box frame, the Built-in T-Joint and the Control Support Cap. Yonex China calls it an all-round racquet that raises both handling and hitting power, and gives the same “10 mm extended” length it lists for the LD9. Yonex publishes no balance point for it.

A Lin Dan name, not his racquet

Like the rest of the line, the LD3 carries Lin Dan’s initials, and Yonex UK filed it in its Lin Dan Exclusive Collection in late 2016. Yonex’s international product page does not name him, and no Yonex report, staff page or release shows him playing it. Chinese retail titles sell it as Lin Dan’s Rio model (里约奥运林丹同款), a claim no Yonex source makes for the LD3. The model presented as his Rio racquet was the line’s top frame, the Voltric LD Force, which has its own page.

Gold, and a black Yonex never listed

Yonex lists the LD3 in one design, Premium Gold (color 560 on Yonex China), shared by all five 2016 LD models. Owners and retailers also describe a matte or “stealth” black LD3; no Yonex page lists a black version, so its origin is undocumented. Above the LD3 sat the stiff, Taiwan-made LD9 with H.M. Graphite and Sound Filter in its frame; below it, the LD200 and LD100 share its medium flex but are China-made, 4U only, with a plain graphite shaft. The 2012 Voltric 3 LTD, a limited design of the standard 3, is a different racquet with its own page.

On Yonex’s lists for one season

Yonex’s international Voltric list added the LD3 with the rest of the line between July 6 and July 29, 2016, shortly before the Rio Olympics, and its overview and technology tabs were archived that September. It was still listed in November 2016 and gone by March 2, 2017. Yonex UK carried it in its Lin Dan collection by December 2016 and dropped it by May 2017. Yonex Japan never listed it. Yonex published no production end, so 2016 is the last year the LD3 is documented on sale new. Yonex China’s page for it stayed online until October 2017. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Sold as something else

No counterfeit of the LD3 is documented. The practical risk is substitution. In gold the LD3 can pass for an LD Force at a glance, and a black LD3 can be offered as the matte black LD Force, which has its own page. The LD Force is stiff and made in Japan; the LD3 is medium and made in Taiwan. A listing titled only “Lin Dan Voltric” can mean any of the five gold models.

Where it sits

The LD3 is the middle rung of Yonex’s 2016 Lin Dan line: medium flex like the two lower models, Taiwan-made and offered in 5U like the LD9. Yonex’s record of it is a product page with its overview and technology tabs, a series list, a UK collection page and a Chinese product page. That is enough to fix its specification, though none of them says why the model was made or how it relates to the Voltric 3.

Authentication

Look for the LD3 model name; Yonex’s item code is VTLD3. Yonex lists it as medium flex, with a graphite and tungsten frame and an H.T. Graphite shaft, in 5U (average 78 g) or 4U (average 83 g), grips 4 and 5, in Premium Gold, and Yonex China gives it as made in Taiwan. Yonex recommends 18–23 lb for 5U and 19–24 lb for 4U. On a gold LD frame, a Japan mark points to the LD Force, a China mark to the LD200 or LD100 (neither offered in 5U), and stiff flex with a Taiwan mark to the LD9. Yonex lists no black LD3. Yonex’s checks: a hologram sticker that resists peeling and a laser-engraved production code on the cap above the handle.

Outlook

The LD3’s interest comes from Lin Dan’s name and its place in the 2016 line; Yonex records no player using it. Confirm the LD3 name, the medium flex and the weight label in clear photographs, since the LD9 shares its gold finish, Taiwan factory and weight classes. Be wary of a gold or black LD3 offered as an LD Force, and of “Rio limited edition” wording, which Yonex’s pages for the LD3 do not use. Ask for daylight photographs of the frame, cone and grip end, and judge the copy on condition.
