ArcSaber 5DX: the even-balance, Japan-made all-rounder on Yonex’s DX frame

An all-rounder on the DX frame

The ArcSaber 5DX (item code ARC5DX) took the rigid DX frame of the ArcSaber 8DX and turned it into an all-round racquet. Yonex Japan announced it as “an even-balance all-round model on the high-rigidity DX frame” (剛性の高いDXフレームにイーブンバランスのオールラウンドモデル登場), and Yonex’s 2011 international catalog called it a “good all-round racquet with DX frame and extra fast handling.” It was made in Japan, offered only in 3U, rated Medium flex, and sold for about two years before Yonex Japan ended its production in 2012.

Added to Yonex Japan’s list in December 2010

Yonex Japan’s racquet list of October 5, 2010 shows five ArcSabers without it; the list of December 14, 2010 includes it, and its product page carried a new-product tag. Yonex published no release date, so 2010 is its earliest documented year. Yonex Japan listed a high-modulus carbon frame with cup-stacked carbon nanotube, a carbon shaft and a built-in T-joint, 10 mm longer than standard, with C.S. Cap, the new grommet pattern, Isometric, Solid Feel Core and the Aero-Box frame among its technologies. The 2011 catalog gives the frame as H.M. Graphite with CS Carbon Nanotube and the shaft as Graphite. Yonex Japan priced it at ¥18,000 before tax and recommended 19–27 lb.

No named player

Yonex names no player for the 5DX. Its Japanese suitability grid rated it best for intermediate men and suitable for intermediate women, with no mark for beginners or advanced players. The players Yonex documented on the DX frame used the 8DX, which has its own page.

Two gloss colors, one weight

Yonex sold the 5DX under one item code in two colors, Gloss Orange and Gloss Magenta, which the 2011 catalog describes as an “ultra distinctive” gloss metallic frame design. It came only in 3U (85–89.9 g); Yonex Japan offered grips 4 and 5, the international catalog grips 3 to 5. The same catalog page shows the plain ArcSaber 5 (ARC5) in Black/Purple, also Medium, 3U and Japan-made, but with the high-modulus graphite in the shaft rather than the frame and no DX frame. The 8DX above it was rated Extra Stiff and offered in 2U and 3U.

Japan and the international range, 2010–2012

The 5DX was sold in Japan and through Yonex’s international range. Yonex Japan’s list still showed it in June 2012, and Yonex’s international ArcSaber list carried it in September 2012; by March 2013 the international list no longer did. Yonex Japan’s old-model index places it in the group of models whose production ended in 2012 (2012年生産終了モデル), with the ArcSaber 10, the 8DX and the 3 FL. Yonex Japan’s 2012 spec chart places its balance marker close to even, in line with Yonex’s own wording. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Fakes and mix-ups

No counterfeit of the ArcSaber 5DX is documented. The likelier confusion is between Yonex’s DX and non-DX models: the ArcSaber 5 has no DX in its name and came in Black/Purple, the 8DX is a stiffer frame in Copper Orange, and the ArcSaber 4DX of 2015 is a Taiwan-made Black/Orange racquet with NANOAIR SPRING in its frame; it has its own page. The model name and the ARC5DX code settle which one a frame is.

The DX frame’s softer side

The 5DX is a footnote to the 8DX: the same DX idea at Medium flex, aimed at intermediate players rather than hard hitters, in the two-year window when Yonex Japan’s ArcSaber line expanded downward. Its gloss finishes make it one of the easier ArcSabers of the period to recognize.

Authentication

Check the model name ArcSaber 5DX and the item code ARC5DX. Yonex documents two colors only, Gloss Orange and Gloss Magenta, both in a glossy metallic finish; a matte orange frame or a Copper Orange one with 8DX on it is a different model. Yonex lists it in 3U only (85–89.9 g), with grips 3 to 5, made in Japan and 10 mm longer than standard, so a 2U or 4U label, or a Taiwan marking, does not fit. Yonex Japan recommended 19–27 lb, and the frame should be rated Medium flex.

Outlook

A buyer should confirm the 5DX name and ARC5DX code in photographs, check the 3U label and the Japan marking, and make sure an orange ArcSaber is not the 8DX or the 2015 4DX. As a 2010–2012 frame, its grommets and grip may need replacing; look for cracks near the head and the T-joint before buying.
