ArcSaber 3 FL: the flexible 4U ArcSaber Yonex made in Japan for 2011–2012
The soft, light end of the 2011 line
The ArcSaber 3 FL (item code ARC3FL) was the soft, light end of the Japan-made ArcSabers in Yonex’s 2011 catalog: the only one of them rated Flexible, and offered only in 4U. Yonex Japan summed it up as “easy to hit far, with the high restoring force of CS Carbon Nanotube and a soft design” (高い復元力と、柔らかい設計で楽に飛ばす), and Yonex’s 2011 international catalog said much the same: “easy to shoot further with strong CS Carbon Nanotube construction and flexible design.” Despite the number, it has nothing to do with the ArcSaber 3 that Yonex Japan launched in 2023.
A new model of early 2011
The 3 FL is not on Yonex Japan’s racquet list of December 14, 2010; its product page was online with a new-product tag by March 7, 2011, and it appears in Yonex’s 2011 international web catalog. Yonex published no release date, so 2011 is its earliest documented year. Yonex Japan listed a carbon frame with cup-stacked carbon nanotube, a high-modulus carbon shaft and the new built-in T-joint, 10 mm longer than standard; the catalog gives Graphite with CS Carbon Nanotube for the frame and H.M. Graphite for the shaft. Yonex Japan priced it at ¥14,000 before tax and recommended 17–22 lb, a lower range than the 19–27 lb it gave the 5DX.
For beginners and intermediates
Yonex names no player for the 3 FL. Its Japanese suitability grid rated it best for beginner men and suitable for intermediate men, and best for both beginner and intermediate women, with no mark for advanced players.
Marine and Peach
Yonex sold the 3 FL under one item code in two colors, Marine and Peach (マリン、ピーチ), in 4U only (80–84.9 g) with grips 5 and 6. In the 2011 catalog it shares a page with the 3U ArcSaber 5DX and ArcSaber 5, both rated Medium. The ArcSaber 9 FL, Yonex’s first 4U ArcSaber in 2010, was a stiffer Medium-flex model, and the Taiwan-made ArcSaber 6 FL of 2015 later took the flexible 4U slot; each has its own page.
Two years on sale, 2011–2012
Yonex Japan listed the 3 FL until at least June 2012, and Yonex’s international ArcSaber list still showed it in September 2012; by March 2013 the international list no longer did. Yonex Japan’s old-model index places it in the group whose production ended in 2012 (2012年生産終了モデル), with the ArcSaber 10, 8DX and 5DX. Yonex Japan’s 2012 spec chart draws its balance marker on the even line. No verified sales are recorded yet.
A shared number, not fakes
No counterfeit of the ArcSaber 3 FL is documented. The common mix-up is with the 2023 ArcSaber 3 (ARC3), a different Japan-made racquet with no FL in its name or code; it has its own page. The FL suffix and the ARC3FL code identify this model.
An early light ArcSaber
The 3 FL is a short-lived entry point to the first ArcSaber generation: a soft, light, Japan-made frame for newer players, sold for about two years. For a collector it is mainly a period piece of the carbon-nanotube ArcSaber line, recognizable by its colors and suffix.
Check the model name ArcSaber 3 FL and the item code ARC3FL; a frame coded ARC3 is the 2023 ArcSaber 3. Yonex documents two colors, Marine and Peach, a single 4U class (80–84.9 g) with grips 5 and 6, Flexible rating, and Made in Japan, 10 mm longer than standard. A 3U label, a stiff rating or a Taiwan or China marking does not fit. Yonex Japan recommended 17–22 lb.
A buyer should confirm the 3 FL name and ARC3FL code in photographs, the 4U label and the Japan marking, and make sure a listing titled “ArcSaber 3” is not the 2023 model. As a 2011–2012 frame, check for cracks at the head and T-joint and expect to replace grommets and grip.
