Where to find it
Built for the net: Armortec 800 Defensive
The first specialised doubles pair
The Armortec 800 was Yonex's first serious commitment to building racquets explicitly for the two distinct roles within a doubles pairing — and the Defensive model was the frontcourt specialist's tool. Released in 2006, the AT-800DE used an aerodynamic cross-section frame to minimise air resistance for quick, net-handed play. The flexible shaft made for easy receives, fast drives, and reactive blocks — everything a frontcourt player needs when shuttles arrive at close range. This was Yonex explicitly acknowledging that doubles play had distinct technical requirements, not just doubles players using singles racquets.
The engineering behind it
The Power Armor System delivered 4% more speed through a head-weighted effect in the frame top, while the Single-Pass Grommet Hole Construction added durability at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions — protection against the frame contact damage that characterises aggressive frontcourt play. The Ultra HM Graphite + gForce Ti frame and Ultra HM Graphite + Ultimum Ti shaft gave it the material credentials of a genuine Japan-made competition racquet at this price tier. 4U weight (80–84g) for rapid hand speed.
The prototype for what followed
The AT-800 Defensive and Offensive together represent the blueprint for the entire AX-88 S/D concept — role-specific doubles racquets sharing a frame family but optimised for different court positions. Yonex would spend the next 15 years refining this concept, but the AT-800 is where it was first fully committed to in production. For collectors, owning both the Defensive and Offensive variants is a compact lesson in doubles-specialisation design history.
Aerodynamic cross-section frame — distinct from the AT-800OF's box cross-section. Flexible shaft — noticeably more flex than the Offensive variant. Ultra HM Graphite + gForce Ti frame construction. 4U weight. Made in Japan. Standard Yonex hologram. 'Defensive' or 'DE' designation on shaft.
No current tracked price — examples surface rarely. Primarily of interest to Armortec-era completionists and collectors building a doubles specialisation history shelf. The AT-800OF is the more valuable companion piece given its head-heavy power spec.
