Astrox 01 Ability: a graphite Hi-Flex starter Astrox, told from its twins by color
Three names, one specification
The Astrox 01 Ability (item code AX01A) is one of three entry-level Astrox racquets Yonex sells under the 01 number; the others are the Astrox 01 Clear and the Astrox 01 Feel. Yonex prints the same specification for all three: Hi-Flex, a graphite frame and shaft, 10 mm longer than standard, 4U at an average 83 g, and 20–28 lb string advice. What Yonex documents as setting the Ability apart is its name and its colors: Black / Purple in 2021, then Red, and White / Pink today. Yonex does not explain what “Ability” stands for.
Graphite, Hi-Flex, one weight
Yonex’s global site carried a product page for the Ability by April 2021, the earliest Yonex record of it. No launch announcement or on-sale date is documented, so 2021 is the year Yonex first documented it. That page listed five technologies with the graphite build: the Isometric head shape, which Yonex says enlarges the sweet spot by 7% over a conventional round frame, the AERO+BOX Frame, the Rotational Generator System, a slim shaft and the Control Support Cap; Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog lists the same five. In late 2022 the Ability’s page also printed a built-in T-joint, a row the Clear and Feel pages do not show. Yonex Taiwan gives China as the country of manufacture.
No named player
No player is documented using the Astrox 01 Ability. Yonex Taiwan’s product page carries a block of Yonex athletes, as its other racquet pages do; it does not say any of them use this model. Yonex gives no level wording for the Ability itself, while Yonex USA sells the Feel, with the same specification, as a beginner racquet.
Three colors and two sibling trios
Yonex’s records show the Ability in Black / Purple (its global page of 2021), Red (the global page of 2022 and Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog) and White / Pink (Yonex Taiwan); the global site now lists White / Pink and Red. Every color is 4U. The Astrox 01 Clear and Astrox 01 Feel share the specification and differ in name and color; each has its own page. One step up, the Astrox 02 Ability, Clear and Feel, marked NEW in Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog, use an HT Graphite frame, a BOX Frame and the TFA Cap Plus, with 20–30 lb advice. The Nanoflare 001 Ability, Clear and Feel carry the same three names in the Nanoflare line.
Sold outside Japan
The Ability is current. Yonex’s global site showed it in stock on its Astrox list in October 2026, Yonex Taiwan lists it, and Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog included it, without the NEW tag it gave the 02s; Yonex USA’s store offers only the Feel. It is absent from Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog and from Yonex Japan’s 2024–2026 catalogs, so it is an export model, although the Japan Badminton Association’s 2025 lists of approved racquets include the AX01A. No production end is documented. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Shop copy and namesakes
No counterfeit of the Astrox 01 Ability is documented. The likelier confusion is in shop listings, which give it balance points in millimeters, a stiffer flex or other weights that no Yonex page prints; Yonex lists Hi-Flex and 4U only. The “Head Heavy Balance” field on Yonex Taiwan’s page is the one Yonex prints across the Astrox series, not a measurement of this model. The Japan-only Astrox 00 and the Astrox 1 DG (AX1DG) are different racquets despite the similar numbers.
Choosing among the 01s
The Ability is a current, mass-produced starter with no documented player, edition or production end. Since Yonex gives the three 01s one specification, choosing among them is choosing a color; the Astrox 02 trio is the step up in frame material.
Yonex’s item code is AX01A, and Yonex names it “ASTROX 01 ABILITY.” Yonex documents Hi-Flex, a graphite frame and graphite shaft, 10 mm extra length, 4U (average 83 g) with a G4 or G5 grip, and recommends 20–28 lb. Its documented colors are Black / Purple, Red and White / Pink; a Lime or White / Mint frame is a Feel, and a blue one is more likely a Clear. Yonex Taiwan gives China as the country of manufacture. A frame sold as an Astrox 01 Ability in another weight class or with a stiff shaft does not match any Yonex listing.
A current racquet, usually bought new as a first racquet. Sellers mix the Astrox 01, Astrox 02 and Nanoflare 001 names, which share the words Ability, Clear and Feel, so check the number and letter in the item code as well as the color. Balance points, stiffness grades and countries of manufacture quoted by shops are not Yonex’s; Yonex prints Hi-Flex and 4U.
