The ZZ's shadow: Astrox 100 ZX
The sibling that lived in shadow
The Astrox 100 ZX launched alongside the 100 ZZ in 2020 and immediately lived in its sibling's shadow — which was unfair, because the ZX was a genuinely accomplished offensive racquet offering a different and in many ways more accessible version of the 100's character. While the ZZ used Black Micro Core and NAMD in its upper frame for maximum stiffness and power transfer, the ZX substituted NANOMESH NEO and a hollow shaft, producing a slightly lighter head feel and a more familiar flex profile that many players found easier to integrate.
Elite output, different feel
The ZX sits at a very head-heavy 320mm balance with Extra Stiff flex — the same attacking intent as the ZZ, with a slightly lighter feel at impact from the hollow shaft and NANOMESH NEO construction. Player reports consistently placed smash output just behind the ZZ, which gave many players the full 100-series attack experience with a more manageable swing. Same Japan provenance, same attacking intent, meaningfully different feel at contact.
The collector's alternative
At $300 with the ZZ now commanding $480 and climbing, the ZX is perhaps the most performance-per-dollar proposition in the Astrox 100 family. As the 100 ZZ's retirement narrative dominates collector attention, the ZX becomes the technically serious player's alternative — one that has the same discontinuation date and the same Made in Japan quality but trades at a steep discount because it lacks the ZZ's story. That story gap is the opportunity.
NANOMESH NEO frame designation — distinct from the ZZ's Black Micro Core construction. Hollow shaft (audible difference on tap versus ZZ's solid core). ROTATIONAL GENERATOR SYSTEM on frame. Made in Japan. Extra Stiff flex. Head-heavy balance. Standard Yonex hologram.
Performance-per-dollar leader in the Astrox 100 family. Appreciation will trail the ZZ but remains a strong hold for players who want the 100-series platform without the ZZ premium.
