Astrox 70: a Hi-Flex, Japan-made 4U Astrox that arrived without a release
An Astrox without a launch
The Astrox 70 reached Yonex Japan’s racquet list in autumn 2021 with no press release of its own. The list of late July 2021 did not show it; by October 24 it was there, marked as a new product, and its product page gave the on-sale date as late November 2021, at ¥24,200 including tax (¥22,000 before tax), under item code AX70, made in Japan. Yonex Japan described it in two lines: a racquet design that raises smash power and shot power, with a wide sweet area and a showy color. It is a 4U Astrox with a Hi-Flex shaft, and it later went abroad: Yonex’s global site listed it by February 2023, and Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog carries it.
VDM, Namd and a Hi-Flex shaft
Yonex Japan lists a frame of high-modulus carbon, VDM and tungsten and a shaft of high-strength carbon and Namd, joined by a new built-in T-joint; Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog gives the shaft as HM Graphite and Namd. The technology list adds Isometric, the Rotational Generator System, the Aero+Box shape, Solid Feel Core, a Super Slim Shaft and the Energy Boost Cap. It comes in one weight, 4U (average 83 g), with grips 5 and 6, 10 mm longer than standard, and Yonex recommends 18–26 lb. Yonex Japan prints no flex word, but Yonex USA, Yonex’s global site and Yonex Taiwan all rate the shaft Hi-Flex. Yonex’s English pages print the “Head Heavy” label they give every Astrox; the balance gauge in its 2024–2026 Japanese catalogs leans the 70 toward the head, less far than the Astrox 33 or 55 A.
No player on record
No player is documented using the Astrox 70. Yonex Japan names none for it, and the player gallery on Yonex Taiwan’s page belongs to the Astrox series as a whole. Yonex Japan’s level chart gives it its top mark (◎) for intermediate men and women and a lower mark (○) for advanced players, and leaves the beginner column blank; Yonex USA calls it a racquet for intermediate to advanced players.
One color, Saxe
Yonex has made the 70 in one color, Saxe (サックス, color 027; Yonex USA writes “SAX”), from 2021 to its 2026 catalog, with no limited edition. In Yonex Japan’s Astrox range it sits between the 5U 55 A and the Astrox 77 Pro, which is High Orange, Medium flex and 3U or 4U. Shops often call the 70 the successor to the Astrox 66, the 2018 women’s Astrox that Yonex USA also rated Hi-Flex and that came in 4U at 83 g, made in Japan. Yonex never said so: the two stood side by side on Yonex Japan’s list from autumn 2021 until the 66 left in early 2022.
On sale in Japan and abroad
The 70 is in production. Yonex Japan’s product page showed ¥25,300 including tax by November 2023, its 2024, 2025 and 2026 catalogs carry the 70, and its product list still showed it on October 7, 2026, beside the 55 A, 33 and 22 RX. Outside Japan, Yonex’s global Astrox list first showed it in February 2023 and still did in November 2024, Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog prints it under item code AX70, and Yonex Taiwan lists it at NT$7,300 as made in Japan. Its Japanese, global, US and Taiwanese pages all describe the same Saxe 4U frame. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Mix-ups, not fakes
No counterfeit of the Astrox 70 is documented. Mix-ups are likelier: listings that present it as the Astrox 66 renamed, or confuse it with the Nanoflare 70, which Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog lists in the same table. The item code AX70, the Saxe finish, the 4U label and the Japanese origin identify it, and Yonex Japan sells a dedicated grommet set for it, AC416AXL.
Yonex Japan’s Hi-Flex 4U Astrox
Five years after it appeared on Yonex Japan’s list, the 70 remains the 4U, Hi-Flex Astrox for intermediate players who want the series’ power design with a softer shaft. It is a standard racquet in one color, with no edition and no documented player, so its interest is as a playing frame. Yonex has announced no successor.
Yonex’s item code is AX70. Check for the Saxe finish, a Made in Japan marking, a 4U label (average 83 g, grip 5 or 6) and a frame 10 mm longer than standard. Yonex lists high-modulus carbon, VDM and tungsten in the frame, carbon and Namd in the shaft, a new built-in T-joint and the Energy Boost Cap. Yonex Japan’s dedicated grommet set for it is AC416AXL. A Mist Purple frame coded AX66 is the Astrox 66, and a High Orange frame coded AX77-P is the 77 Pro.
This is a current racquet, sold new in Japan and listed by Yonex abroad. Yonex Japan recommends 18–26 lb and suggests Nanogy 95 for hard hitters and Skyarc for control players. For a used frame, confirm the AX70 code, the Saxe finish and the Made in Japan marking, and ask for daylight photographs of the shaft markings, the head and the frame-shaft joint. Its interest is as a playing racquet, not a player link.
