Astrox 55 A: Yonex Japan’s 5U successor to the Astrox 55, rebuilt for a harder smash

The same headline, a new racquet

Yonex Japan announced the Astrox 55 A on November 11, 2022, under the words that had opened its 2018 Astrox 55 release: “目指せ!未来のエース”, aim to be a future ace. The 2018 release had pitched the 55 at junior-high and high-school players. The new one aimed the 55 A at intermediate players, men and women alike, and promised more power than before. It went on sale in mid-December 2022 under its own item code, AX55A, made in Japan, at ¥23,100 including tax (¥21,000 before tax). Yonex prints the name as “ASTROX 55 A(アストロクス 55 エー)” and gives no meaning for the letter. The plain Astrox 55, which has its own page, had already dropped out of Yonex Japan’s Astrox list, and the 55 A took its place.

What changed from the Astrox 55

Yonex said it had kept the series’ Rotational Generator System but reworked the shaft and the cap, so the racquet flexes and springs back further and delivers more smash speed than its predecessor. The outline stayed: 5U at an average of 78 g, grips 5 and 6, a frame 10 mm longer than standard, Japanese manufacture and a recommended 19–24 lb. The materials changed. The frame adds Volume Cut Resin, the stronger material Yonex had introduced with the 2021 second-generation Astrox 88 S and 88 D, to high-modulus carbon and tungsten. The shaft adds Ultra PE Fiber, which Yonex says absorbs vibration and gives a tenacious flex, to high-modulus carbon and Namd. The release also lists a new built-in T-joint and the Energy Boost Cap Plus, shaped to let the shaft flex while resisting twist; the 55 had the Control Support Cap. Yonex gives the 55 A no flex or balance word, but the balance gauge in its Japanese catalogs places it on the head-heavy side, further than the Astrox 70, 33 or 22 RX.

No professional on record

No professional player is documented using the Astrox 55 A. Yonex’s release mentions Akane Yamaguchi, but only as one of the top players who trust the Astrox series as a whole; it names no user of this model. Yonex Japan rates it for intermediate men and women and leaves the advanced and beginner columns blank, the same rating it gave the 2018 Astrox 55.

Shine Purple and Champagne, never pink

The 55 A has come in two colors from the start, Shine Purple (color 773) and Champagne (293), and Yonex Japan’s 2026 catalog and its product list in October 2026 still show exactly that pair; Yonex has listed no third color and no limited edition. Yonex has listed no pink 55 A; Shine Pink was the second color of the Astrox 55, added in 2019 beside its launch Light Silver under the code AX55. A pink frame sold as a 55 A is therefore a 55 or a mislabeled listing. The two share the number, the 5U weight, the Japanese origin and the 19–24 lb range, so the item code and the color are what separate them.

Still in Yonex Japan’s range

The 55 A is in production. Yonex Japan’s racquet list of December 2023 showed it beside the Astrox 33 and 22 RX, its 2024, 2025 and 2026 catalogs carry it, and its product list still showed both colors on October 4, 2026, with no successor announced. New stock sells at retail in Japan. Yonex Japan is the only Yonex source that documents it: Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog lists neither the 55 A nor the plain Astrox 55, which its 2021 catalog had still carried, although the 2018 model was released worldwide. Outside Japan the 55 A therefore turns up mainly as an import. Resale concerns pre-owned copies; the verified sales shown above come from Asia resale.

Copies and mix-ups

No counterfeit specific to the Astrox 55 A is documented. The likelier error is identity: a listing that confuses the 55 A with the 2018 Astrox 55, which match on paper in weight, length and origin but differ in construction. The item code, the color and the grommet set settle it, as the checklist below sets out.

Yonex Japan’s light intermediate Astrox

Nearly four years after its launch the 55 A still fills the place in Yonex Japan’s range that the Astrox 55 held from 2018, and it remains a Japan-only model. It is a standard racquet in two standard colors, with no limited edition and no documented player, so its interest is practical: a light, Japan-made Astrox for intermediate players building a smash. Its production run is still open, and Yonex has announced no successor.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is AX55A. Check for Shine Purple or Champagne, a Made in Japan marking, a 5U label (average 78 g, grip 5 or 6) and a frame 10 mm longer than standard. Yonex lists high-modulus carbon, Volume Cut Resin and tungsten in the frame, and high-modulus carbon, Namd and Ultra PE Fiber in the shaft. A Light Silver or Shine Pink frame coded AX55 is the 2018 Astrox 55. Yonex Japan sells a dedicated grommet set for each, AC416AXN for the 55 A and AC416AXA for the 55. Yonex’s own test is the hologram sticker, which resists peeling on a genuine racquet and lifts easily with a fingernail on a fake.

Outlook

This is a current racquet, so most players will buy it new in Japan or as an import. Yonex recommends 19–24 lb and suggests Exbolt 65 for hard hitters and Nanogy 98 for control players. For a used frame, confirm the AX55A code and the purple or champagne finish, and ask for daylight photographs of the shaft markings, the head and the frame-shaft joint. Its interest is as Yonex Japan’s 5U intermediate Astrox, not any professional record.
