Astrox 88 D Game (2nd Gen): Camel Gold like the 88 D Pro, built in Taiwan

Camel Gold at Game level

The second-generation Astrox 88 D Game wears the same Camel Gold as the 88 D Pro, and the same extra length: like every 88 D, it is 10 mm longer than standard. Underneath it is a different racquet, made in Taiwan rather than Japan, with a Nanomesh Neo shaft instead of Namd and a medium flex where the Pro is stiff. Yonex Japan pitched it at intermediate players and gave it the Pro’s concept design, with a tagline about breaking down opponents with attacking smashes. D stands for Dominate, Yonex’s label for the back-court half of a doubles pair. Yonex Japan sold the Game at an open price, setting no list price, and Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog listed it, strung, at $140 as item AX88DG.

Holes placed for the back court

Yonex announced the new 88 D with the 88 S on January 7, 2021, for a worldwide release in late March: a Japan-made Pro for intermediate-to-advanced players and this Game for intermediate players. Two changes were common to both. Volume Cut Resin, a stronger new resin, runs through the whole frame, allowing finer weight distribution and, for the first time, large-diameter string holes in the frame sides. Yonex placed those holes differently on the S and the D, so that the D gains control while keeping the power to break a defense. Yonex Japan summed up the Game’s own build as an Aero+Box frame, a built-in T-joint, a slim shaft, Nanomesh Neo and the Energy Boost Cap. It does without the Pro’s squarer Isometric head and thicker frame sides, its new joint and Namd shaft. Yonex Japan’s balance gauge for the D Game sits clearly on the head-heavy side, a little short of the 88 D Pro’s.

The Pro’s players, not the Game’s

No professional is documented using the 2021 88 D Game. Yonex’s later equipment lists put Keigo Sonoda, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon, Soh Wooi Yik and Kunlavut Vitidsarn on the 88 D Pro, and none of its 2021–23 lists names the Game. The 88 D Pro, on which Kunlavut won the 2023 world singles title, has its own page. Yonex Japan rated the D Game best for intermediate men and women and suitable for beginners, leaving the advanced column blank.

Camel Gold in three tiers

Camel Gold was the only color. Yonex Japan sold the Game in 4U (average 83 g, grips 5–6) and 3U (88 g, grips 4–6); Yonex USA offered only the 4U, strung. In Japan the D came as Pro and Game only. Elsewhere a stiff 88 D Tour (AX88DT) with a Namd shaft sat between them, sold by Yonex USA as a special order and painted the same Camel Gold. The first-generation 88 D of 2018 had no Game. The third-generation 88 D Game of March 2024 (3AX88D-G), which has its own page, is Black/Silver and 4U only, with CSR in the frame, a 2G-Nanomesh Neo shaft and the Power-Assist Bumper. The twin 88 S Game of 2021 is Emerald Blue and 5 mm longer.

On sale until the 2024 generation

The 2021 D Game was a standard production model. Yonex’s global store still showed it in stock in December 2023, and Yonex Japan’s page for it was online in May 2023. No Yonex production-end notice is documented; the 2024 generation went on sale worldwide on March 22, 2024, and Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog lists only its codes. It had no limited edition and no documented match use. The singles and doubles titles won with the second-generation 88 D belong to the Pro, and Camel Gold alone does not show which of the two racquets a listing offers. The verified sales shown above come from Asia resale of pre-owned frames.

Fakes and look-alikes

Yonex’s counterfeit advice is general: its own test is the hologram sticker, which resists peeling on a genuine racquet and lifts easily with a fingernail on a fake. The practical risk with the D Game is mistaken identity. The Pro, the export Tour and the Game share the Camel Gold paint and the 10 mm length, so a seller can describe a Game as a Pro in good faith; the origin marking, the shaft material and the item code tell them apart.

What the 2024 D added

The 2024 generation kept a Game tier and added a beginner model, the Astrox 88 Play, beside the Pro, Tour and Game. Yonex Japan’s release lists a D-specific stability weight distribution, extra weight in the frame sides, as common to the D Pro, Tour and Game, something its 2021 release did not name for the D. The Power-Assist Bumper on the frame top went into all three upper tiers, while the new 2G-Namd Flex Force shaft stayed with the Pro and Tour. The 2021 D Game began the 88 D Game line; its plain frame top, without a bumper, is the quickest way to tell it from its successor.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is AX88D-G (AX88DG in Yonex USA’s catalog). Check for Camel Gold, a Made in Taiwan marking, a frame 10 mm longer than standard and Yonex’s weights: 4U at an average of 83 g (grips 5–6) or 3U at 88 g (grips 4–6). Yonex lists medium flex, high-modulus carbon with Volume Cut Resin and tungsten in the frame, and high-modulus carbon with Nanomesh Neo in the shaft. There is no Power-Assist Bumper across the frame top. A Camel Gold frame made in Japan with a Namd shaft is the Pro; the export Tour (AX88DT) also has a Namd shaft and is rated stiff. A Black/Silver frame with a bumper is the 2024 Game; an Emerald Blue frame is an 88 S. Yonex Japan’s grommet set for it is AC416AXI.

Outlook

The 2021 88 D Game is a player’s racquet: intermediate-level, sold new for about three years and with no documented professional user. Yonex recommends 20–28 lb for the 4U and 21–29 lb for the 3U, and Yonex Japan suggested Aerobite Boost for hard hitters and Aerobite for control players. Buy on condition, weight and grip, and check the item code when a listing says only “88 D”. Kunlavut’s and Soh’s titles belong to the Pro.
