Astrox 88 D Tour (2nd Gen): the Camel Gold back-court tier sold outside Japan

The middle Camel Gold racquet

Three Camel Gold racquets launched as the 2021 Astrox 88 D, and only outside Japan was there a middle one. The 88 D Tour took the Japan-made Pro’s frame of high-modulus graphite, Volume Cut Resin and tungsten and its Namd shaft, and Yonex rated it stiff, as it did the Pro; the Game below it is medium, with a Nanomesh Neo shaft. Yonex Japan’s launch announcement covered only the Pro and the Game. Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog offered the D Tour as a special order at $200, against $270 for the Pro and $140 for the strung Game.

Built for the back court

Yonex’s global release of January 7, 2021 said the 88 D models, designed for back-court players, would balance repulsion and shuttle hold for maximum power, and that the line would return in March 2021; Yonex Japan put the worldwide launch in late March. The D Tour is 10 mm longer than standard, twice the 88 S’s extra length. In the launch table it differs from the Pro only in its joint, a Built-in T-Joint rather than the New Built-in T-Joint, with a footnote that some technologies are not applied to the Tour or Game. Yonex USA’s catalog fills in part of that: the Tour keeps the new Isometric head shape (“PRO and TOUR series only”), the Extra Slim Shaft and the Energy Boost Cap Plus, lists a Rexis Shaft, and leaves out the Pro’s Solid Feel Core.

The Pro’s record, not the Tour’s

Yonex names no player on the 88 D Tour. Its professionals appear on the Pro: the launch release had Marcus Fernaldi Gideon, Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota debuting the 88 S and 88 D Pros in March 2021, and Kunlavut Vitidsarn’s 2023 world title belongs to the 88 D Pro, whose page tells that story. Yonex presented the Tour and the Game as its affordable models of the same concept.

Camel Gold across four tiers

The D Tour came only in Camel Gold, the color of the 88 D Pro, the 88 D Game and a graphite 88 D Play (AX88D-PL, medium flex, 4U only) that Yonex Taiwan listed by 2022 and Yonex’s global store stocked in 2023; it has its own page. TOUR is printed in large letters along the frame. Yonex’s global product page and Yonex Taiwan offered 4U (average 83 g) and 3U (88 g); Yonex USA’s catalog carried the 4U alone, as item AX88DT. The Emerald Blue 88 S Tour is the front-court twin, 5 mm longer than standard. In 2024 the third-generation 88 D Tour (3AX88D-T), which has its own page, replaced it in Black/Silver, with a 2G-Namd Flex Force shaft, a Power-Assist Bumper and the extra weight in the frame sides that Yonex listed for the D Pro, Tour and Game.

Stocked until autumn 2023

Yonex’s global Astrox list showed the D Tour from May 2021, and its product page, item AX88D-T, read “In stock” in March and again on September 29, 2023. Nothing Yonex published records a production end. The 2024 generation reached shops worldwide on March 22, 2024, and Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog carries only its codes, so the 2021 D Tour’s last documented year on sale new is 2023. It was a standard model, never an edition, and Yonex Japan did not list it. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Telling the Camel Gold tiers apart

No counterfeit of the 2021 88 D Tour is documented. The confusion that does occur is between tiers: a Camel Gold frame of this generation can be a Pro, Tour, Game or Play, and the printed tier name and the item code tell which. Flex is a second check, since Yonex rates the Pro and Tour stiff and the Game and Play medium. Generation is the third: the 2024 Tour’s code adds a leading 3, and its frame top carries a bumper.

Kept, and brought to Japan

Yonex kept the Tour when it rebuilt the 88 in 2024 and took it to Japan, where the release added a Tour beside the existing Pro and Game. The 2024 D Tour again shares the Pro’s shaft material, now 2G-Namd Flex Force, and Yonex Japan’s table lists it as made in Taiwan. For the 2021 D Tour, no Yonex release, catalog or product page states a country of manufacture.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is AX88D-T (AX88DT in Yonex USA’s catalog). Look for Camel Gold paint with TOUR along the frame, a frame 10 mm longer than standard, and 4U (average 83 g) or 3U (88 g). Yonex specifies stiff flex, a high-modulus graphite frame with Volume Cut Resin and tungsten, a high-modulus graphite shaft with Namd and a Built-in T-Joint, with no bumper across the frame top. Yonex recommends stringing the 3U at 21–29 lb and the 4U at 20–28 lb. A Camel Gold frame reading PRO and marked Made in Japan is the 88 D Pro; an Emerald Blue frame, 5 mm longer, is an 88 S.

Outlook

The 2021 88 D Tour suits a back-court player who wants a stiff Namd shaft and the 88 D’s extra length below Pro level. Check the tier print and item code first, then the weight class, since the Tour came in 3U and 4U. The 88 D Pro’s titles do not carry over to it, and a listing that calls a Camel Gold frame a Pro without a PRO print or a Japan marking deserves a question.
