Astrox 88 D Play (2nd Gen): Camel Gold back-court length in an all-graphite frame

A fourth Camel Gold tier

Yonex’s global release of January 7, 2021 brought back the Astrox 88 D with three tiers, a Pro, a Tour and a Game. A fourth followed outside Japan: the Astrox 88 D Play, item AX88D-PL, in the same Camel Gold but with plain graphite in place of the line’s materials. It is first documented in 2022, on Yonex Taiwan’s site, and Yonex’s global site listed it from March 2023 until at least late November that year. In 2024 Yonex replaced it and its Emerald Blue twin, the 88 S Play, with a single Astrox 88 Play.

The D’s length, without its materials

Yonex’s specification lists only “Graphite” for the frame and the shaft, rates the Play medium flex and names no technology. The 88 D Pro, Tour and Game above it list high-modulus graphite, Volume Cut Resin and tungsten in the frame, with Namd (Pro and Tour) or Nanomesh Neo (Game) in the shaft. What the Play keeps is the D outline: like every 88 D it is 10 mm longer than standard, and Yonex’s stringing instructions for it match the D Tour’s, skipping holes A7, A9 and A11 on the mains. It came in one weight, 4U at an average of 83 g, with grip 5 or 6, where the tiers above it also came in 3U. Yonex recommends 20–28 lb.

No named user

No Yonex source names a player using the 88 D Play, and Yonex’s pages for it give no player level. The generation’s tournament record belongs to the 88 D Pro, which has its own page.

Camel Gold on four tiers

Camel Gold was the D Play’s only color, the paint of the 88 D Pro (AX88D-P), Tour (AX88D-T) and Game (AX88D-G) of the same generation, so color does not separate the tiers; the item code does. Its twin, the Emerald Blue 88 S Play (AX88S-PL), has the same graphite specification at 5 mm longer than standard; it has its own page. The 2024 Astrox 88 Play (3AX88-PL), which also has its own page, is one model for both halves: Black/Silver, 10 mm longer like the D Play, and grip 5 only.

Listed abroad, 2022–2023

The D Play was sold outside Japan only. Yonex Taiwan listed it by August 2022 at a suggested NT$2,000, the same as the S Play and below the D Tour’s NT$4,300. Yonex’s global site first listed it in March 2023 and still showed it in stock on November 30, 2023; by late February 2024 its Astrox list carried the single Astrox 88 Play instead. Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog does not include it, Yonex Japan sold no Play, and no Yonex production-end notice is documented, so 2023 is the last year it is documented on sale new. No verified sales are recorded yet.

When the paint is the same

No counterfeit of the 88 D Play is documented. The practical risk is identity: four Camel Gold tiers of one generation, and a 2024 Play of the same length and almost the same name. A Play can be listed as the Game, which Yonex also rates medium, so the item code and the size matter more than the paint. A listing that credits the Play with Volume Cut Resin, tungsten or a Namd shaft is describing a higher tier, and one in Black/Silver is the 2024 Play.

One Play in place of two

The 2024 generation kept a Play tier and gave its single Astrox 88 Play the D’s 10 mm length, so in outline the D Play is that model’s closest predecessor, in Camel Gold rather than Black/Silver. It is the lowest rung of the 2021 D ladder: the back-court length and paint without any of the Pro’s materials.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is AX88D-PL. Check for Camel Gold paint, a frame 10 mm longer than standard and a 4U label (average 83 g) with grip 5 or 6. Yonex lists medium flex and graphite in the frame and the shaft, and recommends 20–28 lb. A Camel Gold frame offered in 3U, or with high-modulus graphite, Volume Cut Resin, tungsten, Namd or Nanomesh Neo in its specification, is a Pro, Tour or Game. An Emerald Blue frame 5 mm longer is an S, and a Black/Silver frame coded 3AX88-PL is the 2024 Astrox 88 Play, which has grip 5 only. Yonex does not state where the Play was made.

Outlook

The 2021 88 D Play is the plainest racquet in the Camel Gold line. Confirm the AX88D-PL code and the 4U size before buying, and treat any tournament history or Pro technology in a listing as the Pro’s. A buyer who wants the D’s materials or a stiff shaft needs a Tour or Pro; one who wants the same length in a current model has the 2024 Astrox 88 Play.
