Astrox 88 Play: one beginner racquet for both halves of Yonex’s 88 doubles pair

No S, no D

Every other Astrox 88 of 2024 comes in two versions, the front-court S and the back-court D. The beginner Astrox 88 Play does not: Yonex sells a single model, item 3AX88-PL, with no letter in its name or code. In outline it follows the D, at 10 mm longer than standard and in the D’s Black/Silver, but Yonex lists only graphite in its frame and shaft and rates it medium flex. It comes in 4U only and is not part of Yonex Japan’s range.

Named in the 2024 launch

Yonex’s English release of February 22, 2024, announcing the third-generation 88 S and 88 D for a global launch on March 22, listed the Pro, Tour and Game “and beginner model ASTROX 88 PLAY”, adding that every model shares the performance concept but varies in materials and technology. Yonex Japan’s release of the same day names only the Pro, Tour and Game, and marks its technology list, the Rotational Generator System and the new Power-Assist Bumper, as common to those three. Yonex’s specification for the Play names no technology at all, only graphite in the frame and shaft. Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog listed it as a new model.

Made for beginners

No player is linked to the 88 Play in any Yonex source, which fits a racquet Yonex launched as the line’s beginner model. Its single size, 4U at an average of 83 g with grip 5, and its medium flex suit that role. The 88’s documented players use the Pro.

One color, one size

Yonex lists the Play in Black/Silver only, the scheme of the 88 D Pro, Tour and Game, and in 4U with grip 5. The S tiers are Silver/Black and 5 mm longer than standard, so in looks and length the Play sits with the D. There is no Japanese version, and the six Japanese shop-association 88 items are all Pro, Tour or Game. Yonex’s 2021 release paired the 88 S/D Pro with lower-priced Tour and Game models only, but by 2022 that generation also had a Play for each half outside Japan, the Emerald Blue 88 S Play (AX88S-PL, 5 mm longer) and the Camel Gold 88 D Play (AX88D-PL, 10 mm longer); each has its own page.

An export model

The 88 Play is current. It is on the Astrox list of Yonex’s global site and was listed as new in Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog, but Yonex Japan’s 2024–2026 catalogs leave it out, so it is sold outside Japan only. Yonex has published no list price for it in its catalogs or on its product page, and does not state where it is made. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Reading the code

No counterfeit of the 88 Play is documented. The likelier mix-up is with the 88 D Game, which shares the Black/Silver paint, the 10 mm length, the medium flex and the 4U size. The D Game is item 3AX88D-G, made in Taiwan with CSR in the frame and 2G-Nanomesh Neo in the shaft, and comes with grip 5 or 6; the Play is 3AX88-PL, graphite throughout, with grip 5 only. A listing that calls the Play an “88 D” or an “88 S”, or credits it with Namd, is describing another tier; the 2021 generation’s Emerald Blue 88 S Play and Camel Gold 88 D Play (AX88S-PL, AX88D-PL) have their own pages.

A first rung under the 88

The Play is the first single Play for both halves of the 88: the 2021 generation had separate 88 S and 88 D Plays, each with its own page. Like the Astrox 99 Play and 77 Play, it extends its line downward. Yonex gives it neither the S’s length nor a front-court version, so it is an entry point to the 88’s look and name rather than a scaled-down S or D.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is 3AX88-PL, with no S or D. Look for Black/Silver paint, a frame 10 mm longer than standard and a 4U label (average 83 g) with grip 5. Yonex lists graphite in the frame and shaft and medium flex, and recommends 20–28 lb. A Black/Silver 88 coded 3AX88D is a D Pro, Tour or Game, and a Silver/Black one coded 3AX88S is an S. A frame offered in 3U is not a Play, and one with grip 6 is not this Play: the 2021 generation’s Emerald Blue 88 S Play and Camel Gold 88 D Play came with grip 5 or 6.

Outlook

The 88 Play is a current beginner racquet, so the checks are simple: the 3AX88-PL code and the 4U G5 size. Expect none of the technology Yonex lists for the Pro, Tour and Game; it names graphite only. A buyer who wants the S’s 5 mm length or the series technology needs a Game or above, and one who wants a stiff flex needs a Tour or Pro.
