Astrox 88 S Play (2nd Gen): the Emerald Blue fourth tier Yonex added after launch

A fourth tier, added later

Yonex’s global release of January 7, 2021 brought back the Astrox 88 S with three tiers, a Pro, a Tour and a Game. A fourth followed outside Japan: the Astrox 88 S Play, item AX88S-PL, in the same Emerald Blue but with plain graphite in place of the line’s materials. It is first documented in 2022, on Yonex Taiwan’s site, and was first listed on Yonex’s global site in March 2023. In 2024 the third generation replaced it and its Camel Gold twin, the 88 D Play, with a single Astrox 88 Play.

Graphite where the Pro had resin and tungsten

Yonex’s specification lists only “Graphite” for the frame and the shaft, rates the Play medium flex and names no technology. The 88 S Pro, Tour and Game above it list high-modulus graphite, Volume Cut Resin and tungsten in the frame, with Namd (Pro and Tour) or Nanomesh Neo (Game) in the shaft. What the Play keeps is the S outline: like every 88 S it is 5 mm longer than standard, and Yonex’s stringing instructions for it are the same as for the S Tour. It came in one weight, 4U at an average of 83 g, with grip 5 or 6, where the tiers above it also came in 3U. Yonex recommends 20–28 lb.

No named user

No Yonex source names a player using the 88 S Play, and Yonex’s pages for it give no player level. The generation’s tournament record belongs to the 88 S Pro, which has its own page.

Emerald Blue on four tiers

Emerald Blue was the S Play’s only color, the paint of the 88 S Pro (AX88S-P), Tour (AX88S-T) and Game (AX88S-G) of the same generation, so color does not separate the tiers; the item code does. Its twin, the Camel Gold 88 D Play (AX88D-PL), has the same graphite specification at 10 mm longer than standard; it has its own page. The 2024 Astrox 88 Play (3AX88-PL), which also has its own page, is one model for both halves: Black/Silver, 10 mm longer and grip 5 only.

Listed abroad, 2022–2023

The S Play was sold outside Japan only. Yonex Taiwan listed it by August 2022 at a suggested NT$2,000, below the S Game’s NT$2,700, the S Tour’s NT$4,300 and the S Pro’s NT$7,400. Yonex’s global site first listed it in March 2023 and still showed it in stock in late September 2023; by late February 2024 its Astrox list carried the single Astrox 88 Play instead. Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog does not include it, Yonex Japan sold no Play, and no Yonex production-end notice is documented, so 2023 is the last year it is documented on sale new. No verified sales are recorded yet.

When the paint is the same

No counterfeit of the 88 S Play is documented. The practical risk is identity: four Emerald Blue tiers of one generation, and a 2024 model with almost the same name. A Play can be listed as the Game, which Yonex also rates medium, so the item code and the size matter more than the paint. A listing that credits the Play with Volume Cut Resin, tungsten or a Namd shaft is describing a higher tier, and one in Black/Silver is the 2024 Play.

One Play in place of two

The 2024 generation kept a Play tier but merged the S and D Plays into one Astrox 88 Play with the D’s 10 mm length, so the 2021 S Play is the only Astrox 88 Play documented at the S’s 5 mm length. It is the lowest rung of its ladder: the 88 S look and length without any of the Pro’s materials.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is AX88S-PL. Check for Emerald Blue paint, a frame 5 mm longer than standard and a 4U label (average 83 g) with grip 5 or 6. Yonex lists medium flex and graphite in the frame and the shaft, and recommends 20–28 lb. An Emerald Blue frame offered in 3U, or with high-modulus graphite, Volume Cut Resin, tungsten, Namd or Nanomesh Neo in its specification, is a Pro, Tour or Game. A Camel Gold frame 10 mm longer is a D, and a Black/Silver frame coded 3AX88-PL is the 2024 Astrox 88 Play. Yonex does not state where the Play was made.

Outlook

The 2021 88 S Play is the plainest racquet in a tournament line’s paint. Confirm the AX88S-PL code and the 4U size before buying, and treat any tournament history or Pro technology in a listing as the Pro’s. A buyer who wants the S’s materials or a stiff shaft needs a Tour or Pro; one who wants a current model needs the 2024 Astrox 88 Play, which is 10 mm longer.
