Astrox 88 S Tour (2nd Gen): the Pro’s Namd shaft, sold only outside Japan

A middle tier Japan did not sell

The 2021 Astrox 88 S Tour was the second generation’s export tier. Yonex’s global release of January 7, 2021 announced the new 88 S Pro together with “affordable models,” a Tour and a Game, and gave the Tour the Pro’s frame materials and its Namd shaft. Yonex Japan’s own release of the same day named only the Pro and the Game, and its 2024 release for the third generation described the Tour as an addition to the existing Pro and Game. Outside Japan the S Tour sat in the middle of the ladder: stiff like the Pro, painted the same Emerald Blue, and priced in Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog at $200, between the Pro at $270 and the Game at $140.

What the Tour kept from the Pro

Yonex said the 88 S and 88 D would be “reintroduced in March 2021,” and Yonex Japan dated the worldwide release to late March; Yonex’s global store showed the S Tour in stock by April 2021. The launch table gives the Tour the Pro’s frame of high-modulus graphite, Volume Cut Resin and tungsten and its high-modulus graphite and Namd shaft, but a Built-in T-Joint where the Pro has the New Built-in T-Joint. Yonex USA’s catalog reserves the new Isometric head shape, with reinforced frame sides, for the “PRO and TOUR series only.” The Tour’s technology list keeps the Extra Slim Shaft and Energy Boost Cap Plus and adds a Rexis Shaft, but omits the Pro’s Solid Feel Core. Like every 88 S it is 5 mm longer than standard, for the front-court player.

No named user

No Yonex source names a player using the 88 S Tour. The launch release named Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Marcus Fernaldi Gideon, and Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota, as debuting the Pro, and the generation’s tournament record is on the 88 S Pro’s page. Yonex described the Tour only as an affordable model built to the same performance concept as the Pro.

Emerald Blue on four tiers

Emerald Blue was the S Tour’s only color, shared with the 88 S Pro, the 88 S Game and a graphite, medium-flex 88 S Play (AX88S-PL) that Yonex Taiwan listed by 2022 and Yonex’s global site by 2023; it has its own page. On the frame side the Tour carries a large TOUR print where the Game reads GAME. Yonex’s global site and Yonex Taiwan offered it in 4U (average 83 g) and 3U (88 g); Yonex USA listed only the 4U, grip G5, as a special order under item AX88ST. Yonex Taiwan printed a suggested price of NT$4,300. The twin 88 D Tour is Camel Gold and 10 mm longer. The third-generation 88 S Tour of March 2024 (3AX88S-T), which has its own page, is a different racquet in new paint, with a 2G-Namd Flex Force shaft and the Power-Assist Bumper.

On Yonex’s store into late 2023

The S Tour was a standard production model with no limited edition. Yonex’s global product page for it, item AX88S-T, still showed it in stock on November 30, 2023, and no Yonex production-end notice is documented. The third generation went on sale worldwide on March 22, 2024, and Yonex USA’s 2024 catalog lists only the new codes, so 2023 is the last year the 2021 Tour is documented on sale new. Yonex Japan did not list it. No verified sales are recorded yet.

When the paint is the same

No counterfeit specific to the 2021 88 S Tour is documented. The practical risk is identity, because four tiers share one paint. A Tour can be offered as the costlier Japan-made Pro, and a Game, with its Nanomesh Neo shaft and medium flex, can be offered as a Tour. The tier word printed on the frame and the item code separate them. Generations get mixed too: the 2024 Tour’s code differs from this one only by a leading 3.

The tier that later reached Japan

The Tour outlived its generation. In 2024 Yonex launched the 88 S and 88 D worldwide in Pro, Tour and Game, with a single Astrox 88 Play for both, and Yonex Japan added the Tour to its own range for the first time. The new Tour again shared the Pro’s shaft material, 2G-Namd Flex Force, which Yonex reserved for the Pro and Tour, and Yonex Japan recorded it as made in Taiwan. No Yonex source states where the 2021 Tour was made.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is AX88S-T (AX88ST in Yonex USA’s 2021 catalog). Check for Emerald Blue paint with TOUR printed along the frame, a frame 5 mm longer than standard and Yonex’s weights: 4U at an average of 83 g or 3U at 88 g. Yonex lists stiff flex, high-modulus graphite with Volume Cut Resin and tungsten in the frame, high-modulus graphite with Namd in the shaft, and a Built-in T-Joint. There is no Power-Assist Bumper across the frame top. An Emerald Blue frame reading PRO and marked Made in Japan is the Pro; one reading GAME, rated medium, with Nanomesh Neo in the shaft, is the Game. No Yonex source states the Tour’s country of manufacture.

Outlook

The 2021 88 S Tour is a player’s racquet for someone who wants the Pro’s stiff Namd shaft and front-court length in a lower tier. Yonex recommends 20–28 lb for the 4U and 21–29 lb for the 3U. Confirm the TOUR print, the item code and the weight class before buying, and treat any Pro tournament history in a listing as the Pro’s, not this frame’s.
