Carbonex 23: the 2000 Muscle Power Frame Carbonex, named in a 2010 Super Series title
The only Carbonex among 2000’s new technology
Carbonex 23 is the only Carbonex on Yonex Japan’s 2000 New Technology racquet page, beside the Muscle Power 100, Isometric Ti Swing Power and the Ti 10, 10R, 6, 7 and 8. Yonex Japan’s copy for the 23 (item code CAB23) was headed “muscle frame, new-type Carbonex” (筋肉フレーム・新型カーボネックス), and Yonex’s 2000 Asian catalog flags it NEW.
Muscle Power Frame, standard length
Yonex Japan’s March 2000 page calls it a Carbonex with the Muscle Power Frame for intermediate and advanced players, its frame cross-section cut 7% for a sharp swing, in a standard-size frame of 664 mm overall length for handling, with a high-modulus carbon frame and shaft. Pages from 2004 add a built-in T-joint and print 日本製. The Asian catalog gives Flex Stiff, high-modulus graphite in frame and shaft, 2U (90–94 g), and calls the frame “ideal weapon for aggressive players who prefer high-tension stringing.” Japan offered 3U at 85–89 g and 2U at 90–94 g, in grips 4 and 5.
A 2010 doubles title
No launch player is documented. Yonex Japan’s report on the 2010 Denmark Open lists Satoko Suetsuna (Renesas SKY) with a CAB23: she and Miyuki Maeda, on the VT70, won the women’s doubles 21–17, 21–14 over Shizuka Matsuo and Mami Naito. Yonex Japan’s May 2011 reports again pair her CAB23 with Maeda’s VT70. Both are after Yonex Japan filed the model as ended (2009), and Yonex names the model, not the colorway.
Orange, then red, and a tension change
Orange (005) is the color on Yonex Japan’s pages for 2000, and the Asian catalog’s main photograph shows a mostly black frame with orange trim. Red (001), tagged as a new color, replaced it on the April 2001 page and stayed to the last page of April 2007. Recommended tension rose with the red: 16–18 lb mains and 18–20 lb crosses in 3U on the 2000 page, 17–20 and 19–22 lb in April 2001, and 17–22 lb from 2004, with 2U 18–20 and 20–22, then 18–21 and 20–23, then 18–23 lb. Yonex suggested BG80 for hard hitters and BG85 for control players.
Japan, Asia and the US
Yonex Japan listed the 23 on its racket list through April 2007, and its old-model index files it with the 2009 production ends (with Ti 3, Ti Zero and Nanospeed 7000), the latest of Yonex’s dates and its end here. Yonex’s Asian catalog of 2000 carries it, and Yonex USA’s Carbonex page named the Carbonex-23 in December 2002 through February 2004, beside the 20 Muscle and the 8200 Light, which has its own page; by June 2004 only the 20 Muscle remained. Yonex Japan printed ¥17,000 before tax (消費税別) in March 2000 and ¥17,850 including tax on 2004–2007 pages. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Reading the frame
No counterfeit of the Carbonex 23 is documented. Yonex’s catalog photograph shows the Muscle Power Frame as raised arches between the frame and the grommets in its close-up images, but other Yonex racquets share that frame, so the printed name decides: the Asian pages write Carbonex-23, the Japanese ones カーボネックス23 with the code CAB23. It is a different racquet from the Carbonex 20 Muscle and 30 Muscle.
A Carbonex that outlasted its year
The 23 stayed on Yonex Japan’s racket lists for most of a decade and was still named in a Super Series doubles final a year after its documented production end. It sits above the Carbonex 13 and 17 and below the Ultimum Ti Carbonex 30 Muscle of 2003.
Yonex documents these checks for the Carbonex 23: item code CAB23 (Japan) or the printed name Carbonex-23 (Asia, US); Orange 005 in 2000 and Red 001 from April 2001; the Muscle Power Frame; weight classes 3U (85–89 g) and 2U (90–94 g) in Japan, 2U only in the Asian catalog; made in Japan on the 2004–2007 pages; and a 664 mm overall length on the March 2000 page. Yonex printed no balance. The Carbonex 20 Muscle and 30 Muscle are other racquets.
A buyer should match the name or code CAB23 and the color (orange for 2000, red for 2001–2007), and ask for the weight class. Recommended tension changed over the years, so check Yonex’s figure for the era rather than one range. Look at the grommet arches, throat and hoop for cracks on a frame 18–26 years old. Yonex documents a Suetsuna listing from 2010–2011 but not which color she used.
