Carbonex 22: the stiff high-modulus Carbonex on Yonex USA’s 1999 racquet page
First on the 1999 Carbonex page
Yonex USA’s Carbonex page of 1999 lists four racquets, and the Carbonex-22 comes first, ahead of the Carbonex-20 Long that the page introduces as “the new long racquet.” The two share a specification block almost word for word. Yonex’s spec chart of the same period, which the collector who scanned it dates to 1999, plots the 22 and the 20 Long identically: top marks for stiffness, power and control, the only two Carbonex columns with all three. Those two records are all that Yonex documents for the 22.
High-modulus graphite, Stiff, 2U
The Yonex USA block reads Flex: Stiff; Frame: H.M. Graphite; Shaft: H.M. Graphite; Weight: 2U (90–94 g); grip size G4. Yonex recommends 18–25 lb on the mains and 18–20 lb on the crosses, the widest main range on the page: the 20 Long and 9 Tour get 16–18 lb mains and the 8200 16–20 lb. The page’s series text credits the Carbonex line with a “stiff and powerful, yet lightweight box-type cross-section.” Yonex gives no balance point, length, item code, price or country of manufacture for the 22.
No player on record
No Yonex source names a player using the Carbonex 22. The 1999 page and the chart carry no player names.
One record, several neighbors
No color, edition or photograph of the 22 is documented. Its nearest record is the Carbonex 20 Long, which has its own page and differs on paper only in its 16–18 lb main-string advice. On the same page the Carbonex-9 Tour is Medium Flex with a plain graphite frame and the Carbonex-8200 is Flexible in graphite. On the chart the Carbonex 21 sits beside the 22, a notch less stiff, and the Carbonex 23, new in the 2000 Asian catalog, is a different racquet with the Muscle Power Frame; the 9 Tour, 21 and 23 each have their own page.
Listed in 1999
Yonex USA’s Carbonex page was first recorded in October 1999 and stayed online unchanged to at least April 2001, which dates no sale. The 22 is not on the Carbonex spreads of Yonex’s 1996 Asian catalog, and the 2000 Asian catalog’s Carbonex pages list the 23, 21, 20 Long, 15 Long, 10 Tour, 8 and 8600 without it, so 1999 is its first and last documented year. No Yonex Japan listing and no Yonex price for it are documented. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Name, weight and flex
No counterfeit of the Carbonex 22 is documented. The practical risk is identity: a “Carbonex 21,” “Carbonex 23” or “20 Long” is a different Yonex model, and Yonex documents no shaft print, color or item code for the 22, so the full name on the frame is the check. The only weight class Yonex lists for it is 2U.
A late-1990s export Carbonex
The 22 belongs to Yonex’s late-1990s export Carbonex range, beside the 20 Long, the 21 and the 15 Long, all in high-modulus graphite frame and shaft in Yonex’s export pages, before the Muscle Power Frame reached the series in the 2000 catalog. Its whole Yonex record is one US specification block and one chart column.
Yonex USA documents the Carbonex 22 as Stiff, with a high-modulus graphite frame and shaft, 2U (90–94 g) and a G4 grip; Yonex recommends 18–25 lb on the mains and 18–20 lb on the crosses. A 3U frame is not a documented 22. Yonex documents no item code, colorway, shaft print or country of manufacture for it, so a seller’s “made in Japan” or color claim is not Yonex’s. Match the full name “Carbonex 22”: the 21, the 23 and the 20 Long are separate models with their own records. On a frame about 25 years old, check the throat, the hoop and the grommets for cracks.
The Carbonex 22 is one of the least documented Carbonex models: one Yonex USA specification and one chart column, both from 1999. Confirm the printed name, the 2U weight and a stiff shaft before assuming a match, and treat any player link, launch year or factory claim as unsupported unless a Yonex source turns up.
