Carbonex 8400: a flexible graphite Carbonex that Yonex China coded CAB-8400TI

One model, two descriptions

Yonex documents the Carbonex 8400 in two places five years apart: as a column in the spec chart of its Badminton Catalog 2000, and on Yonex USA’s Carbonex page, which listed it from 2005 into 2007 as Flexible, with a graphite frame and a graphite shaft, in 2U. A third Yonex record adds a twist: Yonex China’s online model list at the end of 2007 gives the code CAB-8400TI, and a US shop of 2006 titled it the “Carbonex 8400 Titanium,” yet no Yonex specification of the model mentions titanium.

A chart column, then a spec sheet

The 2000 catalog’s chart runs its Carbonex columns from the 23 down to the 8, 8600, 8400 and 8000. The 8400 sits on the fourth of five flex rows, one step above the 8000 on the row labeled Flexible and one below the 8 and 8600, which the same catalog rates Medium Stiff; it also takes the fourth row for power and for control. It has no product block, photograph or NEW tag, so 2000 is its first documented year, not a launch date. The 1999 chart had listed an 8300, 8200 and 8000 and no 8400. Yonex USA’s Carbonex page did not show it in July 2004; by October 2005 it listed the Carbonex 30MS, 8400 and 21. Yonex never said whether the frame changed between the chart and the US page. No balance, length or country of manufacture is documented.

No player on record

No Yonex source names a player with the Carbonex 8400, and neither the 2000 chart nor Yonex USA’s list pictures it in play.

The 8400 and its namesakes

Yonex documents no colorways or editions. The code CAB-8400TI appears on Yonex China’s list beside CAB-8600TI, CAB-8000LIGHT and CAB-8000LT; whether its “TI” marks a titanium-mesh build, as on the 8600 Ti, or is only a code is not documented, and Yonex USA’s spec lists graphite alone. Its neighbors are separate models: the graphite Carbonex 8600 of the 2000 catalog is rated one step higher for flex, power and control; it has its own page. The 8600 Ti of 2007 and the Carbonex 8000 family are other racquets, as is the aluminum-framed Carbonex 8.

On Yonex lists 2000 and 2005–07

Yonex printed no price for the 8400 in the 2000 catalog or on its US page. Its documented life is the 2000 chart and Yonex USA’s Carbonex page, which listed it from October 2005; it was last listed by Yonex USA in 2007, when that site was last updated, and the unchanged page stayed online into 2008 before it was gone by October 2008. Yonex’s international Carbonex lists of 2006 to 2010 never include it, and no Yonex Japan listing is documented. The China list of late 2007 is a later sighting of the code, not evidence of sale. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Name, weight and the Ti question

No counterfeit of the Carbonex 8400 is documented. The identity question is the name: a frame or listing reading “8400 Ti” or “8400 Titanium” matches Yonex China’s code, while Yonex USA’s published specification says graphite. Yonex lists it in 2U (90–94 g) with a G4 grip, which separates it from the 3U 8600 Ti and 8000 Ti of later years.

A lower step of the 8000 line

The 8400 belongs to the graphite 8000-numbered line that Yonex’s 1996 catalog introduced with beginner models, and it sat just above the 8000 in the 2000 chart. Yonex USA carried it as the flexible model beside the stiff Carbonex 21 and 30MS. Its launch date, price, balance and factory are undocumented.

Authentication

Yonex’s own specification for the Carbonex 8400 is Yonex USA’s of 2005–07: Flexible, graphite frame, graphite shaft, 2U (90–94 g), G4 grip. Yonex documents no balance, colorway or country of manufacture, so a seller’s “made in Japan” or “made in Taiwan” claim is not Yonex’s. Read the model name on the shaft: an 8600, 8600 Ti or 8000 is a different racquet, and 3U is not a class Yonex lists for the 8400. A “Ti” or “Titanium” label matches Yonex China’s code CAB-8400TI but is not explained by any Yonex spec. On a frame of this age, check the throat, the grommets and the hoop for cracks.

Outlook

The 8400 interests collectors tracing Yonex’s lower graphite Carbonex models of the early 2000s rather than players. Listings mix “8400,” “8400 Ti” and “8400 Titanium,” and Yonex’s records disagree on the material only in the code, so the printed name and the 2U class are the checks to make. Claims about its year, factory or titanium content need evidence beyond the listing.
