Carbonex 8000 Light: Yonex’s flexible, Taiwan-made graphite Carbonex of 2008–2011

The flexible end of the graphite Carbonex

The Carbonex 8000 Light was the only racquet on Yonex’s international Carbonex list of 2008–2011 not rated Medium or Stiff: a graphite frame and shaft in 3U, made in Taiwan, rated Flexible when it first appeared and Extra Flexible after a 2009 redesign. It sat below the Carbonex 8600 Ti and above the aluminum-framed 7000 DF and 6000 DF.

What Yonex listed

Yonex gives no launch date. The model first appears on its international Carbonex list in February 2008, so 2008 is the year it was first documented. That listing gives Flexible, graphite frame, graphite shaft, 3U (85.0–89.9 g) in G4 or G5, a built-in T-joint and made in Taiwan. Yonex printed no balance, no level wording and no special technology for it beyond the T-joint.

No player on record

No Yonex list page, catalog or staff page connects a player to the Carbonex 8000 Light.

A 2009 new design, and the other 8000s

By March 2009 the list showed “Carbonex 8000 Light (New Design)”, now rated Extra Flexible and offered in G3–G5; from April 2010 it printed the color, orange and black. Yonex China’s model picker carries two entries, CAB-8000LIGHT and CAB-8000LT. The Carbonex 8000 of Yonex’s 1996 catalog was jointless, so it is a different racquet; the Carbonex-8200 Light of Yonex USA’s 2002–2004 pages, the Carbonex 8000 Ti of 2011 (titanium mesh) and the 2020 Carbonex 8000 N are separate models too. The 8200 Light and the 8000 Ti have their own pages.

Three years on the export list

The 8000 Light was an export model. Yonex’s international site listed it from February 2008 to June 2011, the last list before the page was replaced by a link to the 2011 digital catalog; that catalog does not include it. Yonex China’s picker also names it. No Yonex Japan or Yonex USA listing of it is known. No verified sales are recorded yet.

A question of numbers

No counterfeit of the Carbonex 8000 Light is documented. The practical risk is the crowd of 8000 names: the 1996 jointless 8000, the 8200 Light, the 8000 Ti and the 8000 N.

A modest export graphite

For a collector the 8000 Light is a modest, well-dated export Carbonex: two designs over more than three years on Yonex’s list, with the flex wording changed at the redesign. Little else about it is on record.

Authentication

Yonex’s international list gives the Carbonex 8000 Light a graphite frame and graphite shaft, a built-in T-joint, 3U (85.0–89.9 g) and made in Taiwan. The first design (2008) is listed as Flexible in G4 or G5; the 2009 new design as Extra Flexible in G3–G5, in orange and black from 2010. A frame without a T-joint or with titanium mesh is a different 8000-series model.

Outlook

Read the printed model name and the weight class on the frame: several Carbonex models share the 8000 digits. Check the head, the T-joint and the grommets for cracks, as with any frame of this age. Yonex documented no balance for it, and which of the two designs a frame is depends on its paint.
