Carbonex 8600: the graphite 8600 of 2000, years before the titanium-mesh 8600 Ti
The first 8600
Two Carbonex models are named 8600, and the aluminum-framed Carbonex 8 DX carries B-8600 on its cone plate. The titanium-mesh Carbonex 8600 Ti is a model of Yonex’s 2007 catalog; the first Carbonex 8600 is older and plainer: Yonex’s Badminton Catalog 2000 shows a new Carbonex-8600 with a graphite frame and a graphite shaft, rated Medium Stiff and offered in 2U. It is the only one of the catalog’s 8000-numbered models with a photograph and a full specification block, and the 2000 catalog is the only Yonex document that shows it.
Built-in joint, box frame, graphite
The catalog’s Carbonex page prints the 8600 below the 15 Long, the 10 Tour and the aluminum-framed Carbonex 8, tagged NEW and marked with the BTJ (built-in T-joint) and BOX icons. Its block reads Flex: Medium Stiff; Frame: Graphite; Shaft: Graphite; 2U (90–94 g); grips G2 to G5; and Yonex recommends 16–18 lb for the mains and 18–20 lb for the crosses, the same figures as the Carbonex 8. On the catalog’s spec chart it shares the Medium Stiff row with the 8, sits one step above the 8400 and two above the 8000, and takes the middle of five rows for power and for control. The NEW tag is evidence of a 2000 launch, not proof. No balance, length, item code, price or country of manufacture is printed.
No player on record
No Yonex source names a player with the Carbonex 8600. The catalog page carries a photograph of Ricky Subagja, but it does not say which racquet he used.
Graphite 8600 and 8600 Ti
The catalog photograph shows one design, a gold-toned head on a darker shaft printed “Carbonex 8600”; Yonex names no colorway. The Carbonex 8600 Ti that Yonex’s 2007 catalog tagged NEW is a different specification: 3U, Medium flex and titanium mesh in a graphite frame; it has its own page. Yonex documents no link between the two beyond the number. The 8400 below it on the 2000 chart has its own page, and the 1999 chart had shown an 8300, 8200 and 8000 but no 8600.
One catalog year
The 8600’s documented life is the 2000 catalog. Yonex USA’s Carbonex pages of 2002 to 2006 never list it, Yonex’s international Carbonex lists show only the 8600 Ti from 2008, and Yonex China’s model list of 2007–09 codes only CAB-8600TI. No Yonex Japan listing is documented, and the catalog prints no prices, so no Yonex list price is known. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Graphite, 2U, no Ti
No counterfeit of the Carbonex 8600 is documented. The practical question is which 8600 a frame is. Yonex’s 2000 block lists graphite only, 2U and Medium Stiff; a frame marked Ti or titanium, or one in 3U, matches the later 8600 Ti instead. The aluminum-framed Carbonex 8 DX, whose cone plate reads B-8600, is another racquet despite the number; it is covered on the Carbonex 8 page.
A graphite step above the 8
In 2000 the 8600 gave Yonex’s lower Carbonex range a graphite frame with the same weight class, stringing advice and flex rating as the aluminum-framed Carbonex 8 beside it, and the chart rates it a step higher for power and control. Its launch date, price, factory and later history are undocumented.
Yonex’s only specification for the Carbonex 8600 is its Badminton Catalog 2000 block: graphite frame, graphite shaft, built-in T-joint, Medium Stiff, 2U (90–94 g), grips G2 to G5, shown with a gold-toned head and the name on the shaft. Yonex documents no balance, item code, colorway name or country of manufacture, so a seller’s “made in Japan” claim is not Yonex’s. A Ti or titanium marking, or a 3U label, points to the later 8600 Ti; a B-8600 cone plate on an aluminum frame is the Carbonex 8 DX. On a frame about 25 years old, check the throat, the grommets and the hoop for cracks.
The graphite 8600 is a one-catalog model, of interest to collectors tracing Yonex’s lower Carbonex range around 2000 rather than to players. Listings often run “8600” and “8600 Ti” together, so the printed name, any titanium marking and the weight class decide which racquet is on offer. Claims about its year, factory or player use need evidence beyond the listing.
