Carbonex 10 Tour: the purple Muscle Power Frame Carbonex new in Yonex’s 2000 catalog
One of two Muscle Carbonex models
Yonex’s 2000 Asian catalog tags the Carbonex-10 Tour “NEW” and gives it the Muscle Power Frame badge, which only one other Carbonex on those pages carries: the new Carbonex-23. The catalog photograph shows a black frame trimmed in purple, beside an inset of the Muscle Power Frame. No other Yonex catalog or list under this name is documented.
Stiff, 2U, built-in joint
The catalog’s block reads Flex: Stiff, Frame: Graphite, Shaft: H.M. Graphite, weight 2U (90–94 g) and grips G2 to G5, with badges for the Muscle Power Frame, the Built-In T-Joint and the box frame. Yonex recommends 18–20 lb on the mains and 20–22 lb on the crosses, the same as the Carbonex-23 and higher than the 16–18 and 18–20 lb it gives every other Carbonex on those pages. The facing page pitches the Muscle Power Frame on the 23 as added durability for “aggressive players who prefer high-tension stringing.” The “NEW” tag makes 2000 its first documented year, not a confirmed launch date. Yonex gives no balance, price or country of manufacture for it.
No player on record
No Yonex source names a player using the Carbonex 10 Tour. The catalog page carries a photograph of Ricky Subagja of Indonesia, but its caption names only the player, not his racquet.
The 10, the 10 Tour and the 10MS
Yonex documents only the purple-trimmed finish. The number has two Yonex namesakes. The Carbonex 10 of the 1996 catalog has the same composition words, a graphite frame and high-modulus graphite shaft, but no Muscle Power Frame and no printed weight, and it has its own page. Yonex’s international site listed a Carbonex-10MS in November 2006 with the same printed specification: Stiff, graphite frame, H.M. graphite shaft, 2U, Muscle Power and built-in joint badges, made in Japan. No Yonex source says whether the 10MS is the 10 Tour renamed; it has its own page.
A one-catalog model
The 2000 catalog prints no prices, so no Yonex list price is known. The 10 Tour is not on the Yonex spec chart that the collector who scanned it dates to 1999, and no Yonex Japan or Yonex USA listing of it is documented, so 2000 is both its first and its last documented year under this name. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Badges and name
No counterfeit of the Carbonex 10 Tour is documented. Yonex’s photograph shows the model name along a shaft trimmed in purple, matching the purple trim on the frame. A Carbonex-10MS shares its printed specification and a 1996 Carbonex 10 shares its number, so the full name on the shaft decides which racquet it is; the 1996 Carbonex 10 is shown with a copper-toned head instead.
Where the Carbonex 10 line went
The Carbonex 10 Tour paired the Muscle Power Frame with a plain graphite frame, where the Carbonex 23, 21, 20 Long and 15 Long on the same pages use high-modulus graphite, and Yonex later listed a Muscle-named Carbonex-10MS for export with the same printed specification. Its balance, price and factory remain undocumented.
Yonex’s 2000 Asian catalog is the only Yonex specification for the Carbonex 10 Tour: Stiff, a graphite frame on a high-modulus graphite shaft, 2U (90–94 g) in grips G2–G5, the Muscle Power Frame, the Built-In T-Joint and a box frame, photographed in black with purple trim. Yonex recommends 18–20 lb mains and 20–22 lb crosses. It gives no balance or country of manufacture, so a seller’s “made in Japan” claim is not Yonex’s for this name. Check that the shaft reads “10 Tour”: a Carbonex-10MS shares the printed specification, and a 1996 Carbonex 10 has a copper-toned head and no Muscle Power Frame. On a frame about 25 years old, check the throat, grommets and hoop for cracks.
The Carbonex 10 Tour is a collector’s piece from the 2000 Carbonex line, one of two Carbonex models that year with the Muscle Power Frame. Its name is shared in part with the 1996 Carbonex 10 and the 2006 Carbonex-10MS, so the printed name and the purple-trimmed finish decide what is on offer. Claims about weight classes beyond 2U or its factory need evidence beyond the listing.
