Duora 55: the export Duora Yonex pitched at intermediate players

A Duora for intermediate players

Yonex’s one line on the Duora 55 says it “gives intermediate players great power, shuttle control, and maneuverability.” Its 2017 catalog listed it after the Duora 88 and 77, the two Taiwan-made export Duoras of 2016, as a Medium-flex frame offered in 4U as well as 3U. Yonex China had a product page for it by December 2016, which is the earliest Yonex record, and Yonex’s international Duora list first shows it in May 2017. Yonex gave it no launch release and named no player for it, and it stayed on Yonex’s lists until 2020 in three documented colors.

Two faces, plain materials

Yonex China’s first page sums the 55 up as 搭载双面异型拍框系统,正反手击球更得心应手: a two-sided asymmetric frame system that makes forehand and backhand strokes come more easily. Yonex’s international page lists the Dual Optimum System, Nanometric β, an Isometric head, a new grommet pattern, the Aero+Box frame (“combines solid hitting feel and quick swing”), a built-in T-joint and the Control Support Cap. The frame is H.M. Graphite with Nanometric β, the shaft plain graphite, and the racquet 10 mm longer than standard. Yonex rated the flex Medium (中等 in China, where the first page typed it a control model, 控制型) and offered 4U (average 83 g) and 3U (average 88 g) with G4 or G5 grips. Its 2017 and 2018 catalog selectors plot the 55’s box and aero faces separately, both close to the even-balance line.

No player on the 55

Yonex named no player for the Duora 55, and none is documented using it. The only professional on its international and UK pages is Lee Chong Wei, in the series quote Yonex ran on its Duora pages: “I feel like my arm is one with the racquet on both my forehand and backhand, so I can push faster at the net.” That line sells the range, not the 55. Lee’s documented Duoras are the Duora 10 and its editions, which have their own pages.

Flash Yellow, Cyan and a Chinese black

Yonex sold the 55 under one item code, DUO55, in three documented finishes. Yonex UK’s page of May 2017, Yonex’s international page of September 2017 and the 2017 catalog name Flash Yellow; Yonex China’s first pages, under DUO55 and then DUO55EX, call their color 闪橙色 (flash orange, color 557). Yonex’s 2018 catalog names Cyan, Yonex China listed a blue-green 18DUO55EX (蓝绿, 470) by March 2018, and the international page still said Cyan in January 2020. By May 2019 Yonex China also sold a “DUORA 55(新色)”, a new color, in black (黑, 007) as 19DUO55EX. The specs on every page are the same; Yonex China’s prefixes mark color years, not new models. Some shop listings use a “Dark Grey” name that no Yonex page uses.

Four years on export lists

The 55 was an export model. Yonex China listed it by December 2016, and Yonex’s international Duora list first showed it in May 2017 and last in June 2020, beside the 88 and 77 and, from 2018, the 33. Yonex UK listed it in 4U only. Yonex USA’s 2019 catalog names DUO55 only in its stringing instructions, not among the Duoras it pictured, and Yonex Japan’s racquet lists of June 2018 and December 2021 show only the Duora 10, 10 LT, 8 XP, 7, 6 and Z-Strike. When Yonex rebuilt its global site in 2020, the new Duora list of September 2020 had no 55, and Yonex published no production-end notice, so 2020 is the last year it is documented on sale. Yonex China’s page for the black 19DUO55EX was still online in February 2020. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Mix-ups, not documented fakes

No counterfeit of the Duora 55 is documented, and Yonex published no guide specific to it. Mix-ups within the family are the likelier problem, since the export Duoras share a Taiwan origin and the long two-profile frame. The 77 is also rated Medium but was sold only in 3U, and Yonex’s 2018 catalog gives it an H.M. Graphite shaft against the 55’s plain graphite. The 88 is rated Stiff and the 33, added in 2018, Hi-Flex in 4U only. The Astrox 55 is a different series and frame that shares the number; Yonex’s 2019 stringing table lists both.

The intermediate rung of the export branch

In the Duora story the 55 is a supporting piece: the model Yonex added after the 88 and 77, pitched at intermediate players and kept on its export lists for about four years. It has no player, edition or Japanese release behind it. For a collector it fills one slot of the Taiwan-made set of 88, 77, 55 and 33, and Yonex China’s item codes tell its color years apart. The Duora 10 page tells how the series wound down.

Authentication

Yonex’s item code is DUO55; Yonex China used DUO55, DUO55EX, 18DUO55EX and 19DUO55EX by color year. Yonex listed 4U (average 83 g) and 3U (average 88 g) with G4 or G5 grips (Yonex UK: 4U, 80–84.9 g, G4), Medium flex and a frame 10 mm longer than standard, and recommends 19–24 lb for 4U and 19–26 lb for 3U. Yonex China gives Taiwan as the place of manufacture, so a Japan marking points to a Japan-market Duora such as the 7 or 6. Match the finish to Flash Yellow, Cyan or the Chinese black, and check that the head shows the two profiles Yonex calls Aero+Box.

Outlook

Buy the 55 on condition and completeness rather than scarcity: Yonex listed it for about four years in three colors. Confirm the DUO55 code, the 4U or 3U label and a Yonex color name, and treat a “Dark Grey” listing as unconfirmed until photographs show the frame. Ask for daylight photographs of both head faces, the T-joint and the cone, and look for cracks and repainting.
