Isometric 20: the 3L aluminum Isometric of 2000, heavier than the later Isometric-20

An Isometric-20 in 3L

Yonex’s 2000 Asian catalog prints the Isometric 20 on page 12: an aluminum frame on a steel shaft in the 3L class (100–104 g), photographed in Yellow and in Gold. It is the heavier of the page’s two aluminum-and-steel models, a class above the new Isometric 25 (U, 95–99 g). From 2002 Yonex USA sold a different Isometric-20, listed in U from 2004; the two share a name and a build but not a weight class, and that later racquet is the Isometric 20 VF.

What the catalog prints

The block gives the frame (aluminum), the shaft (steel) and the weight, 3L (100–104 g), and Yonex recommends 16–20 lb (7–9 kg). Like the Isometric 25 beside it, it prints no flex rating or grip sizes, and the spec chart on the same page has no column for it. Its only tag is ISO; unlike the 25, it carries no NEW tag, but no earlier Yonex record of it is known. No balance point, length, country of manufacture, item code or price is documented.

No named player

Yonex names no player for the Isometric 20 of 2000, and the catalog gives no playing level.

Two Isometric-20s

The name returned on Yonex USA’s Isometric page in August 2002, on a racquet whose 2004 listing gives Stiff, an aluminum frame, a steel shaft and U (95–99 g); by October 2005 Yonex USA called it the Isometric-20VF. A 3L class against U is a documented difference, and no Yonex source says the two are one frame, so the later model is a separate entry, the Isometric 20 VF. On the 2000 page, the Isometric 25 shares the build in U and has its own page; the Isometric 20 Jr of 2007 is a junior model.

One catalog

The 2000 catalog is the only Yonex record of the 3L Isometric 20, so 2000 is both its earliest and last documented year; no production end is documented. It is absent from Yonex USA’s Isometric pages of 1999–2000 and from Yonex Japan’s 2001 racket index, and the Isometric-20 on Yonex USA’s lists from 2002 is the U model. No Yonex price for it is known. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Checking a frame

No counterfeit of the Isometric 20 is documented. The catalog photographs show “ISOMETRIC 20” on the shaft of both frames, one in Yellow and one in Gold. Because the name was reused, the weight class decides: 3L (100–104 g) is this model, while a U label or a “VF” after the number points to the 2002–07 racquet.

A name used twice

The 2000 Isometric 20 is a footnote to Yonex’s aluminum Isometrics. Its interest is the name: the same number on a heavier frame two years before Yonex USA’s better-documented Isometric-20, which makes the weight label the first thing to read.

Authentication

Yonex documents an aluminum frame, a steel shaft and the 3L class (100–104 g) for the 2000 Isometric 20, and recommends 16–20 lb (7–9 kg); no flex, balance, item code or country of manufacture is documented. The catalog shows it in Yellow and in Gold, with “ISOMETRIC 20” on the shaft. A U label or a “VF” suffix means Yonex USA’s 2002–07 Isometric-20 (the 20 VF); a graphite shaft means a different Isometric. On an aluminum frame more than 20 years old, check the hoop for bends or a twisted head, the shaft for corrosion and the joint where the shaft meets the frame.

Outlook

The 2000 Isometric 20 suits a collector of Yonex’s early aluminum Isometrics. Listings titled “Isometric 20” may be the 2002–07 U model, so ask for the weight label before buying, and treat any flex, balance or made-in figure as the seller’s, since Yonex documents none for this model.
