Isometric 86 VF: the 2000 Vari-Frame Isometric, rated a step above the 76 VF

The middle Vari-Frame of 2000

The Isometric 86 VF is the middle of three Vari-Frame racquets that Yonex’s 2000 Asian catalog tags new on its Isometric page, between the titanium-mesh 96 VF and the 76 VF. Its printed specification is word for word the 76 VF’s: graphite frame, graphite shaft, Medium Flex, 2U (90–94 g), grips 2 to 5. What separates the two on paper is the catalog’s spec chart, which rates the 86 VF one mark higher for power, and the photograph: a dark frame (green or black in the scan) with gold accents, where the 76 VF is blue.

Aerodynamic at the top, box below

On the facing page the catalog sets out its “Isometric VF Theory (Vari-Frame),” which it says “addresses the needs of entry to intermediate level players to increase swing speed.” The frame marries two Yonex sections: an Aerodynamic Shape at the top of the hoop to cut air resistance, tapering midway down into the torque-free Box Shape for face stability. The 86 VF’s icons are NEW, BOX, ISO, SG and AERO, and the catalog photo shows AERO-BOX VARIFRAME lettered on the lower hoop. Yonex recommends 16–18 lb on the mains and 18–20 lb on the crosses. The catalog gives no balance point, length, made-in country or item code.

No named player

No Yonex source names a player for the 86 VF. The 2000 catalog pitches the Vari-Frame line at entry to intermediate players, and its Isometric pages carry no player photographs.

Three VFs, and the 85 VF before them

The 2000 catalog’s three VFs differ in Yonex’s own terms. The 96 VF adds titanium mesh composite to the frame and is Medium Stiff, 3U; the 86 VF and 76 VF share the graphite build, Medium Flex and 2U. On the spec chart the 86 VF matches the 96 VF for power, sits one mark below it for control and one mark softer in flex, and rates one mark above the 76 VF for power. Yonex’s 1999 chart had shown an 85 VF and 85 VF Long beside the 95 VF pair; the 2000 chart has neither, but Yonex never says the 86 VF replaced the 85 VF. Each has its own page. The catalog shows one finish and names no color.

A single catalog year

The 2000 Asian catalog is the only Yonex document that names the 86 VF: its Isometric page and the spec chart on the next page. It is first documented there, with a new tag that is evidence of a recent launch, not proof. Yonex USA’s Isometric page of 1999–2000 does not list it, and none of Yonex Japan’s racquet pages from 2000 on names a VF model. Yonex’s 2007 export catalog lists other VFs, the Isometric 20 VF and 23 VF. So 2000 is the last documented year, not a production end, and no Yonex price is printed for it. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Twin specifications

No counterfeit of the Isometric 86 VF is documented. The risk is identity: the 76 VF carries the same printed materials, flex, weight and stringing advice, so only the name on the shaft tells them apart, with the green-and-gold against blue finish of the catalog photos as a second clue. Later VFs such as the 20 VF and 23 VF share the suffix but not the number. A frame from 2000 also deserves a close look at the throat, hoop and grommets.

A Vari-Frame on paper

The 86 VF belongs to the Vari-Frame trio that Yonex’s 2000 catalog explains on a page of its own, under the titanium-mesh 96 VF. For a collector it is the graphite VF that Yonex’s chart rated for more power than its twin. The VF suffix outlived it: Yonex USA’s 2006 Isometric page lists aluminum-framed VFs such as the 20 VF and 30 VF, and yonex.com still listed a 24 VF and 22 VF in 2010, each with its own number and build.

Authentication

Yonex documents the 86 VF in its 2000 Asian catalog only: graphite frame and shaft, Medium Flex, 2U (90–94 g), grips G2–G5, with Yonex recommending 16–18 lb mains and 18–20 lb crosses. Look for “ISOMETRIC 86 VF” on the shaft and AERO-BOX VARIFRAME on the lower hoop, as in the catalog photo; the finish there is dark (green or black in the scan) with gold accents. A blue frame with the same lettering points to the 76 VF, and a titanium-mesh print to the 96 VF. No item code, balance point or country of manufacture is documented, so treat a seller’s figures for those as unconfirmed.

Outlook

The 86 VF suits a collector of Yonex’s 2000 Isometric lineup or of the Vari-Frame idea. With one Yonex source, check the exact model name on the shaft first, since its twin 76 VF shares every printed spec. Ask for close photographs of the throat, hoop and grommets, and treat any made-in or balance claim as the seller’s, not Yonex’s.
