Isometric 76 VF: the 86 VF’s blue twin in Yonex’s 2000 Vari-Frame lineup
Same words, one mark less power
The Isometric 76 VF is the third and last Vari-Frame racquet on the Isometric page of Yonex’s 2000 Asian catalog, tagged new below the 96 VF and the 86 VF. Its printed specification repeats the 86 VF’s line for line: graphite frame, graphite shaft, Medium Flex, 2U (90–94 g), grips 2 to 5. Yonex separates the two only on the spec chart, where the 76 VF sits one mark lower for power, and in the photograph, which shows a blue frame and shaft where the 86 VF is dark with gold.
A Vari-Frame for developing players
The catalog’s “Isometric VF Theory (Vari-Frame)” page says the design “addresses the needs of entry to intermediate level players to increase swing speed”: an Aerodynamic Shape at the top of the hoop for less air resistance, tapering midway down into the torque-free Box Shape for face stability. The 76 VF carries the NEW, ISO, AERO and BOX icons, one fewer than the 86 VF, which adds SG. Yonex recommends 16–18 lb on the mains and 18–20 lb on the crosses. No balance point, length, made-in country or item code is printed.
No named player
No Yonex source names a player for the 76 VF. The catalog aims the Vari-Frame line at entry to intermediate players and shows no player on its Isometric pages.
Where it sat in 2000
On the 2000 spec chart the 76 VF shares the 86 VF’s flex and control marks and rates one below it for power, level with the aluminum-framed 50 MF. The 96 VF above both adds titanium mesh composite and is Medium Stiff, 3U. Below the VFs the catalog lists the graphite 60 MF Light (3U, Medium Flex) and the aluminum 50 MF. Yonex’s 1999 chart had an 85 VF and 85 VF Long but no 75 or 76. The catalog shows one finish and names no color.
Documented in one catalog
Yonex’s 2000 Asian catalog, its Isometric page and the spec chart on the next page, is the only Yonex document that names the 76 VF. The new tag there is evidence of a recent launch, not proof, so 2000 is its first documented year. Yonex USA’s Isometric page of 1999–2000 does not list it, Yonex Japan’s racquet pages of the time name no VF model, and Yonex’s 2007 export catalog lists other VFs. 2000 is therefore its last documented year rather than a production end. No Yonex price is printed for it. No verified sales are recorded yet.
Telling the twins apart
No counterfeit of the Isometric 76 VF is documented. The 86 VF carries the same printed materials, flex, weight and stringing advice, so the name on the shaft is the identity check, with the blue finish of the catalog photo as a second clue. Later aluminum-framed VFs, such as the 20 VF and 30 VF, share only the suffix. On a frame from 2000, look closely at the throat, hoop and grommets.
The base of the 2000 VFs
The 76 VF is the lowest-rated of the three Vari-Frames that Yonex’s 2000 catalog presented together, the blue partner of the 86 VF. For a collector of that lineup it completes the trio; on paper, its only difference from the 86 VF is a single mark on the power scale.
Yonex documents the 76 VF in its 2000 Asian catalog only: graphite frame and shaft, Medium Flex, 2U (90–94 g), grips G2–G5, with Yonex recommending 16–18 lb mains and 18–20 lb crosses. Look for “ISOMETRIC 76 VF” on the shaft and AERO-BOX VARIFRAME on the lower hoop; the catalog photo shows a blue frame and shaft. A dark (green or black) and gold frame with the same specification points to the 86 VF. No item code, balance point or country of manufacture is documented, so treat a seller’s figures for those as unconfirmed.
The 76 VF suits a collector completing Yonex’s 2000 Vari-Frame trio. Because the 86 VF shares every printed spec, check the model number on the shaft before anything else. Ask for photographs of the throat, hoop and grommets, and treat made-in or balance claims as the seller’s, not Yonex’s.
