Isometric 750 Muscle: the 2000 Isometric built with Yonex’s Muscle Power Frame

A muscle frame in the Isometric series

Yonex’s 2000 Asian catalog marked its Muscle Power Frame, raised arches between the frame and the grommets, on five racquets: the Ti-10 and Ti-7, the Carbonex-23 and Carbonex-10 Tour, and one Isometric, the Isometric-750 Muscle. It was the only one of the five named for the frame and the only racquet in the catalog’s Isometric series to carry it, tagged new on a page otherwise given to the Swing Power racquets. Yonex Japan sold it as the Isometric 750 Muscle, item ISO750MS, at ¥19,000 before tax. It was not the first racquet with the frame: the Ti10 had it in 1999, and the Muscle Power 100, which gave the frame a series of its own, was also a 2000 racquet. The 750 Muscle left Yonex Japan’s list within two years.

Isometric shape, Muscle Power

The catalog explained the Muscle Power Frame as a design that “arches the areas between the frame and grommets, eliminating sharp angles which can weaken strings and lower racquet head durability,” making it the weapon for aggressive players who string at high tension. It rated the 750 Muscle medium stiff, with a high-modulus graphite frame and a graphite shaft, 2U (90–94 g) in grips 2 to 5, and marked it with the Muscle Power Frame, isometric head, built-in T-joint, aero and long icons. Yonex Japan listed a high-modulus carbon frame and an all-carbon shaft and summed the racquet up in two lines: an isometric shape with Muscle Power, giving a wide sweet spot and 10% more frame strength; and an attacking racquet for intermediate players with a supple shaft. “Supple” is Yonex Japan’s copy for the feel; the export catalog’s rating is medium stiff.

No player on record

No player is documented with the Isometric 750 Muscle. Neither the catalog page nor Yonex Japan’s product pages name a user, and Yonex Japan pitched it at intermediate players. No Yonex tournament report or staff page seen lists it.

One silver frame, two weights

Yonex Japan listed one color, silver (017), in 3U and 2U, each in grips 4 and 5, sold with a soft case, and suggested BG80 strings for hard hitters and BG65 for control players. Its page for the 2000 range recommended 16–18 lb mains and 18–20 lb crosses for the 3U and 2 lb more for the 2U, the catalog’s own figures for 2U; the 2001 page raised the ranges to 17–20 lb and 19–22 lb for the 3U and 18–21 lb and 20–23 lb for the 2U. The catalog photo shows a dark frame that lightens toward the throat, with MUSCLE POWER FRAME lettered at the head top. Its page neighbors, the Isometric Ti Swing Power and Swing Power-500, came in four types (SX, SS, SR and SA); the 750 Muscle came in one. Yonex made no limited or player edition.

Two seasons in the lineup

Yonex Japan kept a page for it in its 2000 range, and its April 2001 racquet list placed it between the Isometric Ti Swing Power and the Isometric 300 Long, with the Muscle Power Frame mark beside its name. At ¥19,000 it sat between the Swing Power 500 (¥16,000) and the Ti Swing Power (¥21,000). It was still on the list in February 2002 and gone by April. Yonex Japan filed it with its 2001 models, the group whose production ended that year, beside the Ti8, the regular-length Ti10, the Isometric 300 Long and the Carbonex 20 Long. Any unused example is old stock more than twenty years old. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Telling it from its namesakes

No counterfeit of the Isometric 750 Muscle is documented. The confusion risk lies in the numbers. The Isometric 500 of 1992 and the Isometric Swing Power 500 of 1999–2000 are different frames without the Muscle Power Frame, and the Swing Power racquets mark their type on the shaft. A Yonex frame with raised arches at the head could equally be a Ti-10, a Ti-7, a Carbonex-23 or a Muscle Power model, so the printed name decides.

A muscle frame before the Muscle models

Yonex’s corporate history credits the Muscle Power 100 as the first racquet with the Muscle Power Frame, but Yonex’s own pages show it on the 1999 Ti10 first, and the 2000 catalog adds the 750 Muscle and two Carbonex models. The 750 Muscle was the Isometric series’ share of that early spread of the frame. In April 2001 Yonex Japan introduced the Muscle Power 70 with what it called a new Muscle Power Frame, and the pattern of a model name plus “Muscle” returned with the Carbonex 20 Muscle of 2002. Within the Isometric line, the Ti Swing Power that shared its catalog page outlasted it until 2005.

Authentication

Look for MUSCLE POWER FRAME lettered at the head top and the raised arches between the grommets; Yonex’s catalog photo shows ISOMETRIC 750 on the shaft. Yonex Japan’s item number is ISO750MS and its one listed color is silver (017); the catalog photo’s frame is darker, so judge the finish against the name rather than the other way round. Yonex documents a high-modulus graphite (carbon) frame and a graphite (all-carbon) shaft, rated medium stiff in its export catalog, with a built-in T-joint marked there. Weights: 2U (90–94 g) in the export catalog; 3U or 2U, grips 4 or 5, in Japan. Yonex published no balance and no country of manufacture, so treat any made-in print as a detail to record. An Isometric 500 or Swing Power 500 has no raised arches. On a frame this old, check the head, grommet ridges and joint for cracks.

Outlook

The Isometric 750 Muscle is a minor model with one real point of interest: it is the Isometric that carried the Muscle Power Frame in 2000, under a name that said so. It suits a collection built around Yonex’s Muscle Power years or its Isometric line. Buy on the printed name and the raised frame, ask which weight class it is, and expect a frame that has been strung and played for two decades.
