Isometric Swing Power 500: Yonex’s four-type Swing Power for intermediate players

The Swing Power, one price down

The Isometric Swing Power 500 was the cheaper half of Yonex’s four-type idea. Yonex’s 1999 Asian catalog shows it marked new beside the Swing Power 900, in the same SX, SS, SR and SA types, and Yonex Japan sold it as item ISOS500 at ¥16,000, against ¥20,000 for the 900. Its Japanese page describes Swing Power theory set to the swing speeds of intermediate players, with one model offered in four types. It is a different racquet from the 1992 Isometric 500, which shares the number but has no types.

Graphite in one account, carbon in another

Yonex described the build two ways. The 1999 and 2000 Asian catalogs list a graphite frame and a graphite shaft, where the 900 has a high-modulus graphite frame and an ultra-high-modulus shaft; Yonex Japan’s page calls the 500’s frame high-modulus carbon and its shaft all-carbon. Both catalogs give 87 g for the SX and SS and 81 g for the SR and SA, which the 1999 series chart labels 3U and 4U, and the 900’s stringing advice: 16–18 lb mains and 18–20 lb crosses for the SX and SS, 2 lb less for the SR and SA. Yonex Japan marks the frame 10 mm long, and the 2000 catalog tags it Long. The 1999 chart rates the types from Extra Stiff (SX) to Flexible (SA), but it is illustrated with the 900, and Yonex gives no balance or flex for the 500 alone.

No player on record

No Yonex source names a player for the Swing Power 500. The Gong Zhichao story on the same 1999 catalog page belongs to the 900: she is quoted on choosing its SR type before winning the 1998 Yonex Open Japan. Yonex Japan’s advisory-staff pages of 2003–05 list the later Ti Swing Power for three players, not the 500.

Silver, in four types

Yonex Japan lists one color, silver (017), and both catalog photos show a dark frame, a silver lower shaft and the name printed in white along the shaft. The only variants are the four types: in the 1999 series chart’s terms, SX and SS for offensive players and SR and SA for defensive ones. Yonex Japan paired each type with its own strings, from BG70 Pro or BG65 on the SX to BG95 or BG66 on the SA. The 900 differs by its gold shaft and higher-modulus materials, and the Ti Swing Power by titanium mesh in the frame; both have their own pages.

Two seasons in Yonex’s lists

The 500 is documented from the 1999 catalog to Yonex’s 2000 range. Yonex’s 2000 Asian catalog lists it again, without the new tag, beside the new Ti Swing Power and Isometric 750 Muscle. In Japan its page sat in the “Products ’00” section, and Yonex Japan’s June 2001 racquet lineup no longer included it: the Isometric models there were the Ti Swing Power, 750 Muscle, 300 Long and 250. Yonex Japan’s old-model index of 2002–08 then filed it with its 2000 models, beside the Isometric Pro 700 Long and 400 Long, so 2000 is the last year Yonex documents it. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Mix-ups, not copies

No counterfeit of the Swing Power 500 is documented. The risks are identity ones. The 1992 Isometric 500 shares the number but has no type marking. Within the model, a frame can be sold as the wrong type: the weight separates the 87 g pair (SX or SS) from the 81 g pair (SR or SA) but not the two types within a pair. These frames date from 1999–2000, so check the head, the joint and the shaft for age damage.

The middle of the Swing Power family

The Swing Power 500 had a short run between the 900 of 1998 and the titanium-mesh Ti Swing Power of 2000, which kept the four types on sale until 2005. For a collector it is the middle piece of the Swing Power family, the version that took the four types to a lower price, and the one whose materials Yonex described in two ways.

Authentication

Check for ISOMETRIC SWING POWER 500 printed along the shaft and a type marking (SX, SS, SR or SA). Yonex Japan lists the color as silver (017); Yonex’s catalog photos show a dark frame with a silver lower shaft. The weight should match the type: Yonex’s 1999 catalog gives 87 g (3U) for the SX and SS and 81 g (4U) for the SR and SA. Yonex Japan marks the frame 10 mm long. A gold shaft means the Swing Power 900, titanium mesh in the frame means the Ti Swing Power (black or orange), and the 1992 Isometric 500 has no type marking at all. Yonex recommends 16–18 lb mains for the SX and SS and 14–16 lb for the SR and SA.

Outlook

The Swing Power 500 suits a collector building the Swing Power set or an Isometric run. Decide which type you want, then check the shaft print, the type marking and the weight together. Yonex itself described the materials two ways, as graphite in its export catalogs and as high-modulus carbon in Japan, so a listing’s “graphite” or “carbon” wording settles nothing. Expect frames from 1999–2000 to show their age.
