Muscle Power 60: Yonex’s head-light Muscle Power with a 10 mm longer shaft

A Muscle Power for an easy swing

Yonex sold its Muscle Power line on power: faster smashes, more rebound, an explosive hit. In 2003 Yonex Japan added a model built for an easy swing instead. The Muscle Power 60 was head-light, in Yonex’s own words. Its launch page conceded that lightening the top of a frame usually costs power and length, and said the 60 made up for it with a shaft 10 mm longer at the same overall length and Ultimum Ti composited into that shaft, so that, as Yonex put it, the shuttle would fly with little effort.

A longer shaft, the same length

Yonex Japan’s product page for the MP-60 was first captured in September 2003 with a NEW tag; the April 2003 racquet list had not shown it. A feature page announced it as the newest model of the Muscle Power series, which Yonex called a worldwide best-seller. The product page made three claims: a head-light design for an easy swing; an Ultimum Ti shaft and the Muscle Power Frame raising rebound by 5% (the later page drops the figure); and a shaft lengthened by 10 mm without changing the overall length, so clears fly easily. Yonex listed a high-modulus carbon frame and a high-modulus carbon shaft with Ultimum Ti and a built-in T-joint, in 3U with grip 4 or 5, at ¥21,000 before tax with a soft case. Its later pages recommended 17–22 lb and printed no flex or gram weight.

No player on record

No Yonex source names a player on the MP-60. Yonex Japan’s advisory-staff pages of 2003–05 list professionals on the MP-70, MP-90 and MP-100 but never on the 60, and Yonex’s launch copy spoke of ease of handling rather than of any player.

One white/silver frame, and the export 66

Yonex Japan sold the MP-60 in a single design, white/silver (color 284), unchanged from 2003 to the last captured page of March 2007, with no player or limited edition. Yonex’s export list of April 2006 carried a Muscle Power-66 with the same 3U class (85–89 g), a high-modulus graphite frame, a high-modulus graphite shaft with Ultimum Ti and a made-in-Japan line, rated Flexible. Yonex USA had not listed the 66 in December 2003 and carried it by mid-2004, months after the MP-60 appeared in Japan. No Yonex source says the two are one racquet, and the listings differ: the export 66 came in grips 3 to 5, while Yonex Japan offered grips 4 and 5 and gave no flex word. Yonex USA’s list of June 2004 also offered the 66 in 2U (90–94 g), which Yonex Japan’s MP-60 pages do not list; its October 2005 list and Yonex’s international list gave 3U only. The international list last showed the 66 in February 2007 and had dropped it by May 2007.

Three years on Japan’s list

The MP-60 joined Yonex Japan’s list as its sixth Muscle Power. In December 2003 the line ran from the MP-100 at ¥25,000 down to the MP-50 at ¥19,000, and the 60, at ¥21,000, sat one step below the MP-70. When Yonex Japan began printing tax-inclusive prices, the page showed ¥22,050 on the same ¥21,000 base, so the list price never changed. Yonex Japan lists the MP-60 among the models whose production ended in 2006, with the MP-100; its product page stayed online into 2007. Under this name it appears only on Yonex Japan’s lists. An unused frame today is old stock about twenty years old. No verified sales are recorded yet.

Copies and lookalikes

No counterfeit of the MP-60 is documented. Identity is the more useful check. It is the only white/silver Muscle Power on Yonex Japan’s lists of 2003–06. The MP-45 that followed in 2006 is white and Venus blue, in 3U with grips 5 and 6, with an all-carbon shaft and no Ultimum Ti; it has its own page. The MP-100 was made 10 mm longer overall, while the MP-60 kept the overall length and lengthened only the shaft. A frame named Muscle Power 66 is the export listing, which Yonex never calls the same racquet.

The head-light member of the line

The MP-60 gave the Muscle Power line a head-light member and outlasted the MP-70 beside it by three years. Yonex named no successor. Production of the MP-100 and MP-60 ended in 2006, and of the MP-90, MP-80, MP-45 and MP-40 in 2007, by which time Yonex’s top frames came from the Armortec and Nanospeed lines, launched in 2003 and 2004.

Authentication

Look for a white/silver frame (Yonex color 284) named Muscle Power 60, made in Japan, in 3U with grip 4 or 5. Yonex Japan listed a high-modulus carbon frame and a high-modulus carbon shaft with Ultimum Ti and a built-in T-joint, a head-light design, and a shaft it lengthened by 10 mm without changing the overall length. It listed no other weight class (its first page carried a stray 2U tension line, but the only size was 3U) and published no flex or gram weight. A frame named Muscle Power 66 is the export listing. On a frame about twenty years old, check the grommets, the T-joint and the grip for cracks and repairs.

Outlook

The MP-60 is the head-light member of Yonex Japan’s Muscle Power line, sold from 2003 to its 2006 production end in one white/silver design. No player is on record with it, so its interest lies in the design and in its place beside the MP-70 and MP-100. Confirm the color, the 3U size and the made-in-Japan marking, treat a Muscle Power 66 as a related but separate listing, and inspect an old frame closely.
