ArcSaber 10 Legend Vision Taufik Hidayat: the original red, revived for a legend

The red ArcSaber 10, back for Taufik

In March 2015 Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei, Peter Gade and Taufik Hidayat launched Yonex’s Legends’ Vision program at the All England. By October that year a red ArcSaber 10 carrying Taufik’s name was on sale, three years after the model had left Yonex’s Japanese catalog, and forum posters noted that it looked almost exactly like the 2008 original. That is the appeal of the Legend Vision Taufik: it revives the ArcSaber 10 that Yonex’s own records place in his hands from late 2008, with his signature and name printed on the shaft. It is also why identification matters. The tribute and the original are both red, and many listings call either one simply “ArcSaber 10”.

What Yonex brought back

The ArcSaber 10 was Yonex’s control flagship from 2008, built on the ArcSaber idea the company introduced in 2007: a frame that flexes at impact and holds the shuttle on the strings a fraction longer. The Legend Vision Taufik keeps that construction. Retail specifications list a high-modulus graphite head with CS Carbon Nanotube and Super HMG, a graphite and Ultra PEF shaft, even balance and a stiff flex, 3U at 85–89g, 19–24 lb tension and Made in Japan. Listings for the same frame in its 2019 form give 76 grommet holes. Nothing documented suggests Yonex changed the construction for the tribute. What changed is the graphics and the packaging.

Taufik’s ArcSaber years

Taufik’s best-known titles, the 2004 Olympic gold and the 2005 World Championship, came before the ArcSaber line existed, so this tribute does not commemorate them. His ArcSaber period came later. Yonex’s player page listed the ArcSaber 10 as his racquet by December 2008, and Yonex’s 2013 retrospective of his career attaches his March 2009 India Open title to it; a US retailer’s 2009 product copy also named him as a user after he won that year’s US Open. He moved to the ArcSaber Z-Slash at the September 2009 Yonex Open Japan, Yonex gave him his own Z-Slash model in summer 2010, and a special ArcSaber 11 Taufik edition appeared in 2013, his final season. He retired in June 2013.

One red frame, two codes

The tribute is the most direct callback in the ArcSaber 10 family. The 2008 original is red with a white outer rim, and the Legend Vision Taufik uses the same red-and-white look, adding Taufik’s signature and name in white on the shaft below the ArcSaber 10 logo. Retailer photographs show it with a full-length black Legends’ Vision cover printed with the four founding legends. Some listings date it to 2017. A red ArcSaber 10 carrying Taufik’s name was already on sale in October 2015, and Yonex’s Thai site listed that racquet from 2016 to early 2018 as the ArcSaber 10 Taufik, item ARC10THL, made in Japan in 3U and 2U, with no Legend Vision wording. Retailers list ARC10THL and ARC10LTH as separate products with near-identical descriptions, and no Yonex page lists ARC10LTH, so whether they are one racquet sold two ways or two releases is not settled. Its companion is the white Legend Vision Peter Gade.

A tribute that rarely changes hands

No verified sale of the Legend Vision Taufik has been recorded yet, and completed sales of the Legend Vision ArcSaber 10s are uncommon in general. What circulates instead are asking prices, which differ widely from seller to seller and do not show what anyone paid. Identification adds another layer: a red “ArcSaber 10 Taufik” listing could be this edition, while a plain red ArcSaber 10 could be a 2008 original or an ArcSaber 10 N. Yonex has never published a production figure for the Taufik edition, so a unit count quoted in a listing is an estimate at best.

Counterfeits and substitutions

Fake ArcSaber 10s have circulated for years, and coach Paul Stewart’s review of the model warns of many on eBay. For the Taufik tribute, the more practical risk is substitution. A red ArcSaber 10 from 2008 or 2019, genuine in itself, can be listed as the Legend Vision edition, and a Legend Vision frame can be separated from its cover and sold on its own. The signature and name on the shaft are the edition’s clearest physical marks, and the full-length cover is the part of the set most easily lost. A frame without them is not necessarily fake, but it is not the complete tribute.

Among Taufik’s Yonex frames

Taufik’s name has appeared on several Yonex frames, including the 2010 ArcSaber Z-Slash model and the 2013 ArcSaber 11 edition, which have their own pages, and this Legend Vision ArcSaber 10. Searches for an “ArcSaber 100 Taufik” or a “Voltric 100 Taufik” lead elsewhere: Indian retailers sell an ArcSaber 100 THL and a Voltric 100 THL, entry-level, China-made frames sold under his name; no Yonex catalog is documented listing either. Of those, the Legend Vision edition is the one made after his retirement as a formal tribute, and the one that shares its frame with a Peter Gade edition from the same program. The other founding legends’ editions went on different frames: a Voltric Z-Force II for Lin Dan and a Duora 10 for Lee Chong Wei. The tribute’s standing with collectors rests on that program and on the ArcSaber 10’s reputation as a control racquet. Scarcity figures play no part, because none have been published.

Authentication

Retail specifications list Made in Japan, 3U at 85–89g unstrung, even balance and a stiff shaft; no Yonex specification for the edition has been found. Taufik’s signature and name should be printed on the shaft below the ArcSaber 10 logo; a red frame without them is a standard or 2019 ArcSaber 10, not the tribute. A complete set includes the full-length black Legends’ Vision cover printed with the four founding legends. The serial number should be laser-engraved, not only printed. The hologram should be hard to peel off, and the butt cap should be Yonex’s green with a clean, well-defined O in YONEX; fakes often make it wide and round. Coach Paul Stewart also checks the sharpness of the graphics and the serial code on the ferrule.

Outlook

Buy the Legend Vision Taufik as a set: frame, cover and clear photographs of the shaft graphics and serial codes. Examples that cannot show those are best treated as ordinary ArcSaber 10s. Collectors building the Legend Vision line will want the white Gade edition alongside it, since the two are companion editions on the same frame. Players who only want the ArcSaber 10’s feel can get it from the 2008 original, the Pearl White re-release or the ArcSaber 10 N.
